Manual (stick shift)or Automatic transmission

Nice CVT :026:

Iā€™m not sure about CVT. Iā€™ve got a DSG auto transmission. My first car was a VW. Youā€™re right, it was jerky and no power steering either. The point of a manual transmission is instinctively knowing when to change up or down. Comes with experience - lots of it! :069:

Well, there shouldnā€™t be any changes. Continuously variable and all that stuffā€¦

Yes, it most certainly is seamless. Canā€™t beat a manual transmission for speed though with just a bit of throttle.

Iā€™ve driven both manual and auto. I prefer manual gear boxes. Like Minx said, is instinctively knowing when to change up or down. Who needs dashboard idiot lights to tell you when to change gear?

Yes, but, I have tried more than once, starting off, accelerating gently, felt/heard six, barely-noticeable, changes, making the equivalent of a total of seven ā€œgearsā€. Thingy on the dash just remains in ā€œDā€. If I shove the Auto lever to the right I go up through the gears and they are numbered on the dash; if I push to the left I then go down through the gears, again numbered on the dash. Moving the stick is never really necessary, unless maybe you want to go as slow as poss down an icy decline or tow something up a steep incline without losing revs. Another thing, never really necessary, is the Sport and Comfort modes; Comfort is default and all a sane person would need.

More than about 30 minutes of driving in London and a manual would give me a sore left knee.

Yes, you just ā€˜feelā€™ it. Youā€™re one with the vehicle. Quite a skill! :052:

Iā€™ve got a DSG auto transmission

Iā€™d be getting shot of it when the warranty expires

Absolutely, thatā€™s the plan in 2022  then Iā€™ll get another one under warranty and so the cycle goes

I didnā€™t know that they were numbered.

No contest - definitely manual for me. Iā€™ve driven all sorts of cars and vans be it manual or automatic but only ever owned a manual. If I had to resort to automatic, thatā€™d be the death knell for me - I think Iā€™d give up.

Thereā€™s something about using those gears and controlling the car around the roads and bends that goes with all the sense of anticipation and alertness for whatever lies ahead. That feeling of being at one with the car. Being in control. I donā€™t feel that in an automatic. For me automatics are just a chunk of metal that you sit in and it drives you, not you drive it. Itā€™s just a drive - not an experience if anyone understands what I mean.

I loved driving with a passion. Passed my test in '67, became a driving instructor in '73 and passed the advanced motorist then too. Loved that job, really, really, really loved that job. Friends/family say thatā€™s the happiest they ever saw me work wise. Dad taught me well, he was in the police. The few lessons I had with an instructor before taking the test was with an ex police instructor.
Iā€™ve never forgotten him asking me to walk to his car, which was parked away from his house. He told me later it was his way to gauge if a pupil was going to be a good driver (or not). He saw me as a good drive by the way I walked (go figure that :017: ).

I drive a manual ā€˜tootlerā€™ city type now, 999cc. I tootle. No passion for it, but itā€™s friendly enough. Reliable and serves itā€™s purpose by getting me where I want to be full stop. No gizmos or bells and whistles like reversing cameras or whatever cars do these days - gawd Iā€™d hate all that. The only gizmo is the electric windows (front only)

My only regret driving wise is that I never took lessons or test in an HGV.

Sorry for the ramblings ā€¦ driving is just something I (used) to love

I donā€™t think itā€™s numbered not like manual transmission. Could be wrong?

I could just see you pestaā€¦in your 18 wheeler eating your yorkie bar:lol:

Hi, thatā€™s wonderful to hear. Thereā€™s an old Honda Accord (2009) V6 engine, 6 speed parked in the garage. I still take it out now and then to ā€˜feelā€™ the car. Still a beaut to drive! In fact, I am taking it for a run tomorrow! :mini:

:mrgreen::mrgreen:

Letā€™s see what Dood saysā€¦

Hiya Minx and sorry, I didnā€™t welcome you

Enjoy yourself tomorrow

Weā€™ve always had manual gearboxes and are quite used to them.
Weā€™re getting a new car next March and will probably remain with manual, though we have thought about automatic. Weā€™ll see.
Never a CVT, though. I couldnā€™t rely on an elastic band!

Perhaps a DSG then? :cool2:
