Looking For A Job At My Age After Long Absence

One of my friends in the US (a lady) did this for a while when she was between careers. She said it was great money and easy work. But she is about the same age as Didi and I don’t think she would want to do it now. She was young when she drove a truck. There are all sorts of health restrictions too that might rule out an older person. e.g. in the UK I believe you also have to have 20:20 vision.

That’s interesting Annie. A few weeks back there was a vacancy at a school where I worked for my agency. I applied for the role but it would seem that the employer would have to pay a certain sum to have released me from the agency. I have a friend who’s an ex nurse, she told me a similar story. It’s a contractual matter.

I’ve applied for new permanent internal vacancies that start after the temp assignment has ended and are different from the role I was sent there to do as a temp. Otherwise the agency might want commission if they find out. You can’t in general apply for the same temp job you are doing unless they pay an agency. I guess it also depends on your online presence with your job history. I don’t use linkedin because it’s a good way to nose about someone you may not know too well, but if you do it will be public and an agency can check.

It’s a good way to get an introduction to network, gain experience and confidence and explore future career options.

NB some agencies may have toughened up their contracts and become more hungry for commission - it’s been 22 years since I last temped.
