I’m not bothered maybe it’s will put the brakes on this feast of gluttony and commercialism .
Too true @Muddy , Christmas gets more hedonistic every year and is something we really do try to avoid now because it seems so meaningless… bah humbug…
I agree with you, Muddy, but I also think the advertising should scale back a bit too. and be a bit more mindful of the current situation.
They always threaten us with no Christmas, don’t they? It makes me feel like a kid being told Father Christmas won’t visit if I don’t behave!
Luckily, l have a turkey crown at the bottom of my freezer and lots of beef, gammon and pork joints too. Using them at Christmas will make some space!!
I grew lots of potatoes this year, so l cut up lots of them, parboiled them to roast at Christmas, or whenever l want some.
I had a great year for runner beans. Although, l am not keen on frozen runner beans. I did freeze some of them.
@Muddy …cutting back on the greed would be great.
‘Shortages’ won’t bother me I don’t really ‘do Christmas’. I am sure I will be able to buy some local vegetables to make soup and I am always well stocked with flour to make bread.
Muddy, Soup for your Christmas Day dinner? That sounds very ‘Oliverish’ to me!
I am ever so sorry, l can’t make Christmas dinner at your house this year, as l might not say… ‘Please Sir, l want some more?’
I’m in complete agreement about it being an excuse for gluttony and the waste must be astronomical.
I have never seen so many Pigs in Blankets in my life as I saw flooding supermarket shelves last year and as I’ve said elswhere before, there seemed to be far more than any shop could reasonably expect to sell.
What really amazes me is that these things aren’t exactly difficult to make.
AFAIC if I haven’t got what I want, there is always at least one alternative available.
Not once have I ever seen any shop in the UK with completely empty shelves.
There’s always something edible on them.
it is only September yet adverts are appearing on TV about christmas, how rediculous, soon they will be doing this in say June.
Around this area the Supermarket is full of ‘‘now gear’’.
Plants have arrived this week along with a good display of gardening accessories and bags and bags of soils…
New clothes for the changing seasons and honesty the displays get changed so often the store is never boring…They really know how tp attract people through the doors.
Christmas here is not like the UK but families spend time together of course…just the one day mainly. Boxing day not celebrated.
Yes the shops will suddenly be filled with Xmas Delights…more sparkle and glitter, but I have never seen people buying anything differently…Well of course people will be buying more big boxes containing toys…but just ticks over as far as my eyes see.
We usually have lamb at Xmas and enjoy that roasted.
Mince pies might be missing this year unless I make up my own mincemeat,
I do have loads of British Crackers though…dusty now as well.
As a non Christian, the Christmas period is of little meaning to me, however, that said, our children and grandchildren will always receive presents at some time over the holiday period, just as they do for birthdays and other anniversary celebrations. I suppose in reality, any excuse for a family gathering and a house full is what life is all about and we revel in that situation. The older we become, fewer days remain to enjoy our family, so all are welcome at any time:+1:
The real problem at Christmas is the marketeers make you feel inadequate if you don’t do the traditional dinner with all the trimmings.
They make your children unhappy if they don’t get the toys that are constantly advertised in the weeks before Christmas.
We would need far less to transport if we didn’t bother with Crackers, too much alcohol , Christmas trees and the many other things that seem to make Christmas special for so many.
Years ago children were happy with one special present & a few sweets & the family enjoyed a regular roast dinner.
We all became greedy and wanted more, like the TV ads told is we should have… BUT WHY?
Do our families only love us for what we can give them? Wouldn’t the children be happy with spending time playing silly games with the adults?
If the marketeers stopped pressing us to have more ,so they could make more money, perhaps we could all learn that just spending time with our families is what makes Christmas good, not the luxuries we provide them with.
We will have a standard Sunday lunch followed by a tea time finger buffet , made from whatever I have in stock. There won’t be any children, which is a shame because they love nothing more than beating the adults at any board game or charades!
Hi
I will be at home alone at Christmas.
Presents are all cash.
I have a rib of beef and joint of pork in the freezer, plus veg.
Nothing more I need.
Not a wise post Swim, just think if any local people read this and have no turkey for Christmas they will all come round to your house to wish you “Merry Christmas”.
Not bothered about Christmas, its only Me and Hubby any way, we have an Artificial Xmas tree and Lights, that’s enough, and Turkey, well we prefer Chicken any way.
Slight diversion here, but I have just been informed by the local shop that if the situation regarding petrol and deliveries doesn’t improve, they will be closing in 2 months. They have already had to throw stock out that was sitting in Turkey for ages.
Seems im on my own here. I love Christmas, I love giving gifts and seeing happy faces, I also love opening my gifts. I enjoy cooking the dinner , the atmosphere, the Christmas songs, Christmas movies, I do hope they put polar express on this year its a great animation film.
I will be lighting a candle for my dear departed sister and my mum, my Sister lived Christmas too.
I do not however like the packed supermarkets people panic buying when its only closed for 1 day. I also don’t like how children are so materialistic and their parents spending hundreds on their children.
Christmas Dinner is dyingbout in favour of queuing up at macdonalds , that kinda makes me feel sad
I remember once when the kids were small, we thought it would be an adventure to have a Chinese takeway for Christmas. Oh my word no, no, and no again! It was the most depressing meal I have ever had! Its always been a proper dinner from then on.
What a shame! Did Boris really think that offering them more money would help? Lorry drivers work long hours and spend a lot of time away from home so they couldn’t do more driving by law.
It seemed a good idea to encourage new Drivers but he should have started this when we left the EU, as it takes a while for them to learn how to handle such big lorries .
What we need is more ministers who can see future problems & get off their bums to deal with them faster… that will give them all less to time to woirry about how to win the next election.
After hearing Keir Starmer talk about labours priorities yesterday I dont think the Torys have any strong competition anyway!
