Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng has cancelled meetings in the US and is leaving a day early for crunch talks in the UK as pressure mounts on Liz Truss to U-turn over the mini-budget. Mr Kwarteng is expected to arrive back on Friday for discussions with the prime minister and Conservative MPs. Speaking about the change in his travel plans, a source close to Mr Kwarteng said he “really wants to engage not only with government colleagues, but also MP colleagues” over the financial plans.
It comes as the Bank of England withdraws its post mini-budget emergency support later on Friday - and as many Tory MPs think a U-turn on some of the tax-cutting package is inevitable.
I suspect it’s because he needs someone to explain to him (yet again) precisely what the master plan is, as he probably still doesn’t understand how nor why it might work, and which inane mantras to recite should someone ask a specific question such as “what is your name” which he hasn’t prepared for.
Maybe BJ will be called back to take over at the treasury, once he’s finished fleecing some Americans on his after dinner speech tour. Might as well have the full coco the clown act in this farce.
Could this be a Costa Concordia moment? Will Liz “Schettino” Truss stay aboard to save the passengers and crew, will she throw a few hapless bystanders overboard for her to walk across on her way to the liferaft…?
