With spring in full swing, my daughter and I are have started kayaking again. We alternate between light cruising and hard paddling.
I have enjoyed others’ photos of their recent outings and thought I would share a few from here.
This river and estuary open to the Gulf of Mexico and abundant shrimp fishing. This boat leaves around eleven every evening looking eerie - lights aglow, moving almost silently every night:
One of many branches of the river. Before the hurricane, this dock and boardwalk stretched across the river, but was damaged in the storm, making paddling right up to the headwater accessible:
An sailboat abandoned in the hurricane last year. It is still seaworthy and free for the taking, waiting for the right enterprising teen or twenty something to take it.
Meg, the only trick at all is getting in and out of the thing. Make sure you have the arm of someone steady to help you in and out. Otherwise, it is incredibly easy and loads of fun!
It’s is great fun, thank you! We also enjoy standup paddle boarding out back, but I am a little wary of snakes, so we do more of that on the gulf side.
That is so nice to have those memories, SF. The manatees are still doing well here, though boat traffic and inattentive boat drivers are their greatest threats. Winters are best for seeing them; they congregate in the relatively warm, crystal clear spring-fed rivers.
That is an oustanding movie (leeches ), and I can see how you got that impression. I wonder if that is why I like that boat so much?
You would definitely like it here, OGF. Opportunities for the outdoor life are what drew me back. I am likewise fascinated with your canal systems - the extent of which I knew little about until the last few years.
Nice, Ciderman. I am sure your son still remembers. I looked up that river and it looks like it offers all sorts of opportunities for the outdoor types. I am hoping to do some kayaking when I visit, maybe up near Mt. Cook.
I’ve been wanting to add new kayaking photos to my thread and thought this was it but it’s not. Unfortunately I don’t know how to find my threads yet so I hope you don’t mind if I add my kayaking post to your thread Surfermom.
My husband and I have a similar kayaking style. We cruise along for a while then hit it hard. Not only is it a great workout but it’s actually an intimate thing to do with others without being too close.
We’ve met quite a few new people our age who kayak also so we now have some people to go on some adventures with which I’m looking forward to. I do however enjoy kayaking with just my husband best.
