How is Gertie doing Mups
Hello Meg, thanks for asking.
Her wound looks good and clean and dry, so oozing or seeping, and no inflammation. She is being pretty good and not poking it about hardly at all, so I am relieved about that as I expected her to be a licker.
The only thing I am a little bit concerned about is her being so reluctant to walk. The back door has been open all day but she has toileted in doors twice so far. If I carry her down the garden, she will go, then just sit there and wait to be carried back in.
She is eating fine, but again, she won’t get out of her bed and come and have her dinner, she will tuck in if I hold the bowl for her.
She is not crying or anything, she did a bit when I first brought her home yesterday, but she has not done it today at all. Just not quite sure what to make of this not walking thing.
Any ideas? Do you think it’s just because her tummy feels tender?
Mups I guess Gertie has some bruising.
When I had Chloe done I had to sit on the floor with her to stop her leaping around and to take her out on a lead for the same reason.
If Gertie is peeing/pooing/eating ok and not showing signs of pain or infection I would see how she is tomorrow. As always if you are concerned I would speak to the vet.
She has got the runs a bit today Meg, but I expect that because of the drugs they gave her. She had the anaesthetic, and pain relief and a couple of other things which I can’t remember the name of.
I’m keeping a close eye on her and will see how it goes.
She won’t even drink unless I hold the bowl up to her, but she eats and drinks fine when I help her a bit.
She either sits there looking bewildered, or else is sound asleep.
Strange little dog she is.
It’s good that Gertie is home, Mups. The bewildered look and reluctance to walk may be due to lingering anaesthetic - it takes a while to work out of the system. When I had Nemo ‘done’ they used glue - that was 5yrs ago and he recovered well but was a bit wobbly on his paws for a couple of days.
Gertie will recover well in your excellent hands, of that I am sure. Is Matron Nellie keeping an eye on her as well or is she too busy stealing the strawberries while you are occupied with the patient??
aww poor Gertie. I expect it will all settle down in a couple of days…
Is Gertie still on pain relief Mups ?
Yes she is Abbey. She has one dose per day for the first 4 days after her op.
How is Gertie now Mups ?
Just been thinking my girls have all reacted very differently when spayed . I’m sure I have had ones before who were very reluctant to move . The worst was my poodle omg what a drama she made of it all . The vet even had to come to the house with stronger painkillers for her !
Hi Abs, I have a feeling it is more a phychological then physical problem with her not walking. I think because her tummy perhaps feel a bit tender, she thinks she can’t walk. Not sure what to make of her sleeping so much though.
I just carried her down the garden for a wee, and for the first time she walked back in by herself, but hasn’t got up again since, not even to drink, she still has me holding the bowl for her, then she happily laps up then.
She won’t eat a hard biscuit either. I am crumbling softer ones for her.
It made me wonder if her throat could be a bit sore where they poke the tube down? Dunno. It’s hard to guess when they can’t tell you isn’t it.
I’m not too worried because she wags her tail when I talk to her and looks quite bright - when she’s awake that is.
She sounds like some of mine have been . I have had to hand feed them before !
Others come home and it’s difficult to keep them still !
She does sound like a gentle sensitive wee soul and it’s probably why she is taking it so hard .
I’m sure she will just get a bit better every day taking it slowly which is probably the best way to be .
I pretty sure you have hit the nail on the head Abs, this is what I am feeling too, knowing Gertie.
She is exceptionally naive and trusting, it’s difficult to explain when you don’t know her, but she has always been very different to the others.
I suspect she just knows something is different and has gone into her shell a bit while she fathoms it out.
The glueing seems to be just a matter of personal choice . There’s no right or wrong ,both stitches and glue are equally good .
I remember my poor Dad getting his head glued about 20 years ago .
I had a whippet who was a gentle sensitive wee soul too Mups and the first time I put a coat on her she wouldn’t move . I think she thought her legs were tied it was very funny
Yes, I think that’s how she would be too.
Anything she doesn’t understand, she either freezes or legs it as fast as she can.
I just just tried to take a picture of her in her vest and knickers. I will have a look in a mo and see if it has come out OK or not.
This is a dreadful picture, but this is what she is like, all hunched up.
Then just as I took it she shut her eyes as well.
Honestly, anyone would think she’s beaten to death daily!
