If you were alone in a room with Thatcher, what would you do?

Leave. :zipper_mouth_face:

Does anyone remember “The Winter of Discontent” when the unions had brought the country to a standstill. That was the situation when Margaret Thatcher came to power. Something had to be done to curb the power of the union barons who were holding the country to ransom.

Really?
National debt in 1993 was about 30% of GDP. By the end of that Tory government the debt had grown to 38% of GDP.
From 1997 to 2003, under Labour national debt fell back to 28%; then until the financial crisis of 2008 debt crept back to 38% (so overall no change from inheriting the Tory debt level).
For the rest of the Labour government, until 2010 debt shot up to 70% of GDP as huge amount of spending was done on QE, bank bail outs, etc. Note 1 - not welfare spending but addressing the financial crisis. Note 2 - this spending continued under the Tories from 2010 to 2017 getting to 85%. Debt then came down a bit but after 2020 and Covid it reached 98% of GDP, again during a Tory government.
During the two years so far of a Labour government debt has kicked around at about 95% of GDP.
So Im going to reject your claim that Labour have a worse financial record than the Tories. The facts show otherwise. They show that a financial crisis and a pandemic crisis pushed up debt.

Again we need to look at facts. Leaving the EU has done more harm to the UK economy than any other single government decision - hence the majority support to now move back closer to the EU. You not liking the EU is not the same as the UK previously benefiting hugely from being in the EU.

Scream…she died 13 years ago.

Interesting that the Navy or military may be employed to fight immigration.

There has always been some friction between the UK and some of the EU member states. The large contributions rebate that Margaret Thatcher negotiated in 1984 caused a lot of upset.
BBC NEWS | World | Europe | Q&A: The UK budget rebate

That many years ago, I admired the fortitude Ms. Thatcher had to do the best job she could, while women in GB were not well accepted as politicians.
She hung in there for the long haul. It earned my respect, although I didn’t agree with all of her policies.
Since her time, there are many men I have no respect for at all. When does it get better?

She was voted back for three terms a total of 11 years RN. The longest term of any prime minister in the 20th century. So she must have been doing something right.

I think we need to reference post 58, and folks thinking beyond their station.

She would have tho!

He’s the devil and she’d be his number one witch :icon_mad: :icon_mad:

*During the European witch trials, folklore dictated that witches signed a pact with the devil, making them his earthly accomplices. They were believed to carry out his malevolent bidding in exchange for supernatural powers.

A post was split to a new topic: Spitfire’s Bikes

Not entirely convinced that referring to people who you disagree with as the devil and a witch is helpful.

Personally, I’d like to have asked her to explain what she intended to do to help those who her policies threw into personal crises, and how she intended to inculcate a replacement for local cohesion that would also be a corollary of her theories.
