This is a Jacques Brel song that was translated and made more pop.
I find all of Brel’s music very depressing.

Unfortunately this topic reminded me of an old favourite (not) that used to get played on Radio 2 quite a bit.
I’m sure some people love it to bits but it’s just so dreary and pedestrian. I can only imagine that Sylvia’s mother was losing the will to live by the second verse, probably couldn’t wait for the pips to go!
