I Need a British Passport!

If you come here before 25th Feb then you can stay for 3 months (I believe) and leave with just the Australian passport, but I guess it’s not the best season to come to the UK.

Why do you also need an ETA?

If you have a British passport you don’t need an ETA but using my Australian passport and an ETA is my preferred option

I think this is all down to facial recognition biometric technology at the border. Instead of ID cards and databases they will click people in via the British passport and monitor the rest of us who are already on the British passport biometric database while we travel around the country using cameras and AI.

Anyone who isn’t recognised by the AI will be suspected of being worthy of further surveilance. As AI can now take your clothes off there is no hiding from it. I think everyone already knows my views on this topic.

I thought the rules were that if you are travelling with a non-UK passport then you need an ETA to accompany your non-UK passport (at a cost of £16). If you still have a UK passport then you can travel into the UK with that at no extra cost. If all you have is an old UK passport then, in effect, you only have a non-UK passport … and will need an ETA for entry into the UK.
The UK is not asking for two valid passport for entry.

They are asking for a British passport to be shown on entry for dual citizens after 25th Feb

Correct and if you do not have a valid British passport (presumably not valid anymore) then you are required to show your current valid passport along with an entry certificate of entitlement (ETA visa). From the government web site:

Travelling to the UK
As a dual national, you must travel to the UK using either:

  • a valid UK passport or Irish passport
  • any other valid passport with a certificate of entitlement

Either, not both. The change on 25 Feb is that prior to that date you could enter the UK with your non-UK passport and if it was a passport that allowed you to obtain an ETA then you did not need to get an ETA. Now you do need to get an ETA. What you do not need to do is pay for a replacement UK passport. Unless you want to of course.

So am I right in thinking that I can enter the UK with my valid Italian passport with an ETA?

After reading some posts here, I was beginning to think that being of dual citizen I need to get a British passport to enter the UK and not be able to use my Italian passport + ETA, while other Italian nationals with no dual citizenship can use their Italian passports with ETA. This would be so contradictory. As if I am being punished for leaving the UK and then being forced to get a British passport to go back for a visit! In that case, I’m fine where I am , thank you.

Yes, I’m quite “cheesed off” about this new regulation, I don’t think it’s an effective way of protecting borders, it’s an extremely effective way to deter tourism. It’s their loss.

OR.
Cough Up £50k For a UAE. “Golden Passport/Visa”.

The World is your. Oyster. Well perhaps. Only 158.
Ex UK. PM’s Can confirm. E

that doesn’t seem to be the advice on the Australian website, but then the whole situation appears to be very confusing.

Here is the link to the UK govt website on this issue. It is clear and unambiguous.
I prefer info from the source to the opinions of folk on a forum or the interpretations of other countries. But its up to you.

Thanks, I’ll have a read.

the link to the commons library page below might be helpful

and this extract makes it more appealing to apply for & travel using a British passport than a digital certificate of entitlement

No, not the case.

If you are a dual national you can ONLY enter on a British Passport they will NOT issue an ETA on your other passport.

Got it now? This is from the UK Government page you quoted:

Perhaps you should have read it first?

Also officially renouncing your British Nationality costs over $900

I think the confusion in this thread has been that ETA and Certificate of Entitlement are not one and the same. The cost of the ETA is peanuts. This change really is rough on dual nationals and for what reason?

Britain is broke?

Not if you also have British citizenship. You will need to pay £589 for a digital certificate of entitlement.

Alas I need my Australian Passport to get back but I guess I could sell my British Passport when I return, I doubt I’d ever use it again and I understand any passport fetches a good price on the black market.

I might even make a good profit on the whole trip.
