  • Detectives from the Met Police have ended their inquiry into a BBC presenter and determined there is no evidence a criminal offence has been committed
  • The BBC says it is now resuming its investigation "whilst continuing to be mindful of our duty of care to all involved”
  • The Sun newspaper has reported that the unnamed presenter paid a young person for explicit photos beginning when they were 17
  • A second young person told the BBC on Tuesday the presenter sent them abusive messages, after making contact on a dating app
  • And on Wednesday, The Sun made more allegations - including that the presenter broke lockdown rules in 2021 to meet someone from a dating site

Statement in full

Here is Vicky Flind’s statement on behalf of her husband, given to PA news agency, in full:

"In light of the recent reporting regarding the ‘BBC Presenter’ I am making this statement on behalf of my husband Huw Edwards, after what have been five extremely difficult days for our family.

"I am doing this primarily out of concern for his mental well-being and to protect our children.

"Huw is suffering from serious mental health issues. As is well documented, he has been treated for severe depression in recent years.

"The events of the last few days have greatly worsened matters, he has suffered another serious episode and is now receiving in-patient hospital care where he’ll stay for the foreseeable future.

"Once well enough to do so, he intends to respond to the stories that have been published.

"To be clear Huw was first told that there were allegations being made against him last Thursday.

"In the circumstances and given Huw’s condition I would like to ask that the privacy of my family and everyone else caught up in these upsetting events is respected.

“I know that Huw is deeply sorry that so many colleagues have been impacted by the recent media speculation. We hope this statement will bring that to an end.”

Blimey … that was unexpected … :astonished:

I suppose those who know him were aware of his personal problems but I certainly wasn’t … :open_mouth:

I started a thread Omah and tried to delete but unable to sorry .

I’m shocked Huw Edwards , trusted and known by all . WOW

Just to reiterate

Detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command have now concluded their assessment and have determined there is no information to indicate that a criminal offence has been committed.

So, Huw may be guilty of many things, e.g. irresponsibility, recklessness, selfishness, but he’s committed no crime.

More details may now be released about the allegations from four individuals.

No problem - I think I’ve shifted it out of the way.

Quite - I expected “the presenter” to be one of the “newer” crop … :open_mouth:

Well he might not have committed a crime, but it is definitely Sleaze of the highest order
Why, if I was a suspicious and cynical person I might be tempted to think -
Huh! the BBC’s at it again

Looks like when denials and expensive lawyers can’t cover it up any more he’s playing the mental health card - excuse me while I puke.

And remember that the tens of thousands of pounds that Huw has been alleged to spend in this affair comes from the Licence Fee that we are forced to pay, or else we would be the criminals

I’m not aware that Huw made any denials or employed expensive lawyers to “cover it up”.

His wife says:

Huw is suffering from serious mental health issues. As is well documented, he has been treated for severe depression in recent years.

So “playing the mental health card” does not seem applicable, either.

It just goes to show all the skeletons in the cupboard with these high flyers but why so perverted and with such young people who are vulnerable. As said before is the mental health thing a get out clause . What about THE SUN are they in deep dodo . The parents, where are they , the victim , where is he . Who’s paying the lawyers .

What next I ask myself

Huw was the last person I would have thought of but I am waiting for the full details to come out.

Rolf Harris was the same as far as trust went and look how that ended.
There is an old say that you never really know who is trustworthy unless you have known them for a lifetime :man_shrugging: Sorry M’Lord I was temporally insane at the time.

Innocent until proven guilty

Unfortunately that no longer happens, people are far too busy thinking the worst before they know the true facts. Personally I would like to see no names before proven guilty, but people are happier ripping others apart and throwing them to the wolves. Leading the cry is our Despicable Media, anything to get a story and to hell with anyone who gets hurt in the process.

Am I the only one who feels sorry for Huw. The media are like a pack of wild dogs. and no doubt the police have gone through his stuff with a fine tooth comb. If there was anything to find, they would have found it…Savile has made everyone see a pedo behind every door…Trouble is, people love it!

I feel sorry for his wife and children. He’s been very selfish and irresponsible. If I discovered my father had done something like that I would have been devastated.

WTF is Huw Edwards I hear you ask

No, I feel sorry for him too. Because this appears to be a non-story. The other party was not underage. The police have said no crime was committed. It’s like they think the British public are completely stupid. I can understand this type of news story to be on a sleazy rag, but why is it a top headline on all news channels?

Yes, the police have said they can find no evidence of a crime. The “victim” has said nothing illegal or inappropriate happened and doesn’t want to make a complaint

So is it right that his guilt or otherwise is being still being tried by his employer, the media and the general public?

The other allegations……met someone during lockdown from a dating site, inappropriate messages, need looking into but aren’t as serious, really, and not crimes

Lots of hypocrisy here, when you consider those Tories who partied during lockdown got honours and the Sun throwing up their hands in horror at the idea of revealing pictures of young people with their history of publishing such themselves

Inappropriate messages? Cases like this always prompt further accusations, they need looking into, maybe he was a bit of a sleaze, maybe not?

And his illness? He does have a history of depression, maybe this did push him over the edge? But I don’t like to see the mental health issues card played this way, it looks bad, and think he should have touched it out

Huw Edwards is a father to 4. A family man , yet for some reason, he chooses to befriend a young 17 year old lad to talk sex and show pictures of sexual images , this lad is a drug addict who then feeds this habit with thousands of £s over 4 + years . Another young lad is also exchanging chats with him . This is what we have been told . And If this has happened.

So no criminal offences have occurred, but where are this man’s morals . He has children the same age , how would he feel if his child was a drug addict doing this with an old man .

Many people know what it’s like to live with depression and I’m sure now this has come out he has suffered mentally and is struggling , but to affect young people’s lifes for sexual gratification and feeding a drug habit .

I wonder what Edwards’ reaction would have been if a 61 year old man had been paying for lewd photos from one of his own five children when they were teenagers?
