I also have cut my own hair for as long as I can remember. I don’t know how much it would cost if someone else did it.
The only downside is when people ask where I got it cut, I say I cut it myself. They then need to inspect the cut for some reason. If someone else did it, no need to inspect. If they learn I did it, then some type of critique is necessary.
Other than that, it works out fine.
A year ago the cost was $10. Now it has risen to $15.
I get a Number 1 all over.

Turkish barbers will often singe away hair on the lug holes with a small burning meths swab held in forceps.
When my son was really little he genuinely thought that the barber was deliberately trying to set fire to me.
I heard this horrified gasp and saw the expression on his face in the mirror sitting behind me. Fortunately he was easily reassured 
I used an old fashioned barber in the mid sixties in Handsworth in Brum, who when he had finished used to wave a lit tapir all round your head, when i complained he said singing the ends of your hair inhibits growth
Perhaps that why modern barbers spray water on it to encourage growth…lol
