How fast is your broadband?

I am getting 42 mbps …my rated speed from my isp is 50 mbps …when i first got the internet it was dial up…the fastest i was getting was about 5 Kbps…it would take all nightb just to open a page …

I don’t know whether this is good or bad, it seems quite slow but not sure how it compares with others.

Just tried again on the Ookla Speed test.

Twiz  you speed is similar to that of mine and on the same server at the time of testing .

We could be twins!!!

I’m wondering why my server is in London when I live in Yorkshire and Plusnet is a Yorkshire company.

I don’t have a bustle
But I do wear long skirts

Bird  you don’t have just one server taking your PC you move around. Mine is often Coventry or somewhere .

Thanks Meg. I didn’t know that.

Bird  mine is Studley in Warwickshire tonight, it selects the best server for you according to the ping rate I think .

The server they state on the test is just the server the test uses to test your connection - you can actually specify whichever you prefer

I see Azz thank you  I thought it was automatically selected .

They usually just pick one for you, but you can choose one too if you like

I don’t think I will bother Azz, I am not picky and they don’t make it any faster whichever one I have

Yep, there’s not much point - unless you regularly use a server in a particular area.

My laptops are a bit old so I doubt they have the latest WiFi cards installed but this is the result from my Lenovo Thinkpad T420s which is the newest but I think it is at least three years old.

This actually was the second test in the first test the PING was 8ms but I didn’t believe the upload speed was faster than the download speed.

This is the WAN/Router I am using if you are interested

I can’t do a wired/wireless comparison using Speedtest.net. The only computer we have that connects wirelessly is an iPad. Speedtest.net requires Flash Player and the iPad doesn’t use it.

Speed results can be different depending on the testing service used. I think it would have to be the same one for purely comparing the difference in speed between a wired and wireless connection.

I’ll try ‘speedof.me’ (uses HTML5) later today and post the compared results using this service.

Thanks Bruce, I’d be happy with that wirelessly

You can download the speedtest app for free Mart

Thanks Churrillman, is that a wired or wireless connection?
