Hernias - anyone else suffered with them?

Only just catching up. That’s great news Floydy. Wishing you all the best for your recovery.

Sorry folks, I’m just catching up in here.
Thanks for your replies.

It’s been 9 days since the operation now and I’m getting used to what I can and cannot do.
The pain is such that anything that requires bending i.e. putting socks on, results in a sharp ‘rupture’ type pang to the affected area. As if it’s creasing the wound, so it’s best for me to recline in a chair etc. I have my computer chair positioned very low so that I’m not stooping and keeling my posture straight.
Apart from that I’m doing okay, going for short walks but not lifting anything heavy apart from the kettle! I’m also finding plenty to do with my time, so all’s going to plan

As arranged, the pre-op for the left hernia is on the 14th Nov followed by the op 2 weeks after that. The private hospital don’t know yet that I’ve had the other side done, so we’ll see what they say about that.
Ideally, I’m hoping they do a ‘quick fix’ keyhole surgery operation on this one as that will be best in the long run. There’s no way I want it shelved and then go through all this again at a later date.

Glad to hear you are doing alright Floydy and taking things easy for a while. Try not to rush anything.

Cheers matey

Thanks for keeping us updated Floydy, hope your recovery is swift, and all the best for your future brushes with the surgeon…:wink:

Bit late of me but thanks Bob

Been to the pre-op this morning and the second operation will be going ahead as arranged on the 28th of this month. They were surprised I’d had the other side done but everything is healing up well and so I’m booked in and waiting for the next carve up.

Good news that your hernias, are getting sorted, mate, I think I missed how you got on with your hernia op, did you suffer afterwards much?, or did you hardly notice you’d had an op like some?

Thanks Primus.
No it was a bit of a pain to be honest, but nothing like the horrible stabbing and discomfort the hernia gave me. When the anaethetic and soreness wore off I was suddenly feeling much better. I’m fine walking around and carrying shopping and all set for some light exercise again.
My boss is great with all of this and doesn’t expect me back to work before Christmas, so that’s fine wuth me!

Sounds good Floydy, all the best with your second operation. You are being missed on the exercise thread…Get well soon mate…

Its not the end Floydy: Get the surgery done pay attention to what your surgeon tells you: if you have patience and don’t do anything silly 6 to 8 wks depending on your fitness and follow your doctors advice you will get back to gym work
I snapped the tendon that joins the forearm to the bicep that was back in June I am now back using my weights again it was hard to stay away from my weights but it was worth it.
good luck:023:

Hey Pathfinder, thanks for this bud

Yes, four weeks now since the first op and I’m ready to start getting back to fitness once again. It will be gradual, I won’t do anything silly and certain styles of training will be no more i.e. the really heavy work. What’s the point of that anyway at age 55?
Nope, starting tomorrow (Friday) I’m going more the cardio way. I plan to begin with some treadmill and bike work, maybe some cross-trainer stuff. Definitely now rowing though, as that would involve too much bending and ‘crease up’ the hernia wound too much.
Light weights will be on the agenda too, but I’m drawing the line at free weights for now, sticking to seated machine work and high reps. I think that will work quite well.
I do have some plans in place for when I’m completely free of these operations/recovery, and that is to venture outdoors for some field jogging. Jan 1st is my plan to start with all that.

Great stuff mate all the best :cool2::023:

Good that it’s all going well for you Floydy, you need your life back by what I’ve been reading.

You must be feeling like the turkey does just before Christmas!

Good luck with it anyway, hope it all goes well for you.

Thanks Baz
It’s been a long, slow process but the worst is over with now. The second op comes soon and they tell me that it should be done via keyhole surgery which shouldn’t be anywhere near as restrictive for me.
I went back to the gym yesterday so I’m gradually and tentatively getting my life back in order

I’m so happy for you Floydy. Hoping you will be well enough to enjoy Christmas and the New year celebrations.

Annie, that’s so kind. Thank you and likewise to you
One more operation next week and starting afresh from the new year. It’s been a problematic 2020 to say the least!

Most people have problems Floydy, I’ve had lots of them over the last 45 years, the secret to getting them sorted is how you deal with them. It’s really a case of keeping positive and not letting things get you down. If that starts happening then get busy, do different things. You sound like a determined character so I feel sure you will beat all the problems then life will be good once again.

You’ve got over, or are getting over having the one hernia fixed and if the other one is done keyhole it’s reckoned to be very much less recovery time. Hope all goes well for you with that operation.

Ey? I’m still in 2019 Floydy.
You got a time machine?

Haha! I’m wishing my life away there, Mups! :103: Let’s hope next year will straighten itself out

The second operation went very well today (Thurs). A lovely hospital and very friendly.
Keyhole surgery this time and out by 1.30pm.
Feels much more comfortable than the first op.
