Have you taken any acid suppression medicines?

Well, had the endoscopy, without sedation, not pleasant, but I’m still alive! Now waiting for results of biopsies. I tried doing without the esomeprazole but the acid got the better of me so I’m taking them now and then on advice of gastroenterologist. When I stopped them for that week, I had no ill effects, whereas when I tried to stop omeprazole I had acid & bleeding within two days! As I said before, the food reactions started over a year after I was put on them. Now I’ve managed a few extra foods and although I get terrible tummy pain I don’t have to rush to the loo! So my conclusion has to be the omeprazole did it!
I will be very surprised if they find I’m suffering a wheat allergy as meat was the first food that upset me, we shall see…

Twizard a friend of mines had an endoscopy and they found it was a wheat intolerance and she’s now on a coeliac diet and is feeling so much better. She had eaten wheat for 60 years, but all of a sudden it must have disagreed with her digestive system. What I will say is that she was very slim before, but it even slimmer now that’s she’s coeliac. I had the endoscopy without sedation so I could drive home straight afterwards. As you say, it’s not pleasant, but a means to an end to actually see what’s going on inside. I can’t do without lansoprazol now.

News update! I know you’re riveted!

Now been given results of biopsies, no wheat allergy, now have peppermint capsules Apercap, good news is they can give you urine and stools with an odour to menthol bad news is they could also give you: Rash, itchiness, shortness of breath;headache, slow heartbeat, trembling, unsteadiness, heartburn, blurred vision; got most of that already; itching around the back passage (may have to scoot along the floor) vomiting, pain or difficulty passing urine, and (wait for it ladies) inflamation of the penis. Great, we shall see!

Are the peppermint capsules working ? And - hopefully you wont get any of the side effects !
Have to say this Twiz, Hubs had 4 ulcers years ago and suffers bad indigestion now. I got the Mastika capsules for him, he takes one around 7pm, I was hoping he could get through the night with no problems - they have worked so far where everything else failed. Ask your doc if you can get these on prescription …

i love the way this thread title shows up on the home page: “Have you taken any acid…”

I’m not taking the peppermint for acid it’s for IBS which is what they’ve now decided I’ve got. It’s supposed not to be released until it reaches your large intestine, which is odd as I tasted paraffin about five minutes after I took it, then it tasted like very strong peppermint, only thing I’ve had so far (took about 5pm) is wind-like pain and loud heart beating in my head!

Was ill all last night with terrible cramps and acid reflux which is not something I’ve had since taking Esomeprazole, all day today I’ve been rushing to the loo, only ate a bit of porridge yesterday so must be the pills!

Maybe you need to eat more than just a bit of porridge???

For side effects, take a look at www.askapatient.com

Believe me if I ate anything else I wouldn’t need medication to give me violent results!

Well, the contra-indications said nowt about two whole days of trouble, phoning doc in the morning!

I’m still suffering…

What are your current symptoms and what meds are you taking if any?

Also, what is your diet like?

You were absolutely right Azz! My latest gastroenterolgist told me to stop taking Esomeprazole gradually,so as not to have that awful reflux reaction. I did over about a month. Now I can eat lots more without rushing to the loo after a few minutes. It had got so bad my Gp and dietician had put me on Complan and a high protein supplement called Prosource. I could only eat cereal bars, not even porridge or rice as before. I’m getting terrible stomach ache but I put up with it as it’s wonderful to eat fruit and veg now, even a bit of bread! Thanks for your advice!

This book - Dropping Acid - is written by a (US) specialist in the field of reflux and is very interesting. A large part of the book is low-acid recipes, which are interesting though are written for the US, so there are some odd-sounding ingredients and measurements; one has to be a bit inventive!

Never expected to see this as a side effect!

That makes quite scary reading. :frowning: Fortunately I don’t take any prescribed acid suppressant but was told I may need to take some in the future - shan’t bother now, stick with my extra pillow at night and Gaviscon, it works for now.

I’ve been taking Omeprazole for at least 10 years and I’m not aware of any side effects.

Since Christmas l have experienced an occasional burning sensation at night, bloating and stabbing pains in my tummy, that l blamed on eating rich food or a ?virus. Two weeks ago, as it was still continuing, l went to the doctor and she said I had Reflux.
She prescribed Omeprazole capsules 20mg and Peptac Peppermint Liquid. I thought l would just take the Peptac at night or as necessary and not resort to the Omeprazole unless it got worse.
The Peptac did alleviate my symptoms but in the early hours of yesterday morning, l woke with terrible griping pains on the left of my stomach. In desperation, l took a Omeprazole and it eased it but it gave me an awful headache.
I rang for an appointment at the doctors and saw a locum who arranged a blood test and maybe, a scan?
Yesterday, I still had slight griping pains so I took another Omeprazole and again, l got a headache! I looked on the side of the Peptac bottle and it states the occasional side effects may include stomach cramps! So maybe it was that, that caused my pains?
I have now discovered this thread and see that Omeprazole is mentioned and from what l have read, l don’t want to take it again! l hate having to resort to medication and try to treat things naturally.
I also read here that antacids affect your B12 and l have Pernicious Anaemia!

I was on it for a short while and it turned me around.

I saw a locum one day an she took me off it saying they aren’t meant for long term use and are dangerous.

She put me on Ranitidine at 75mg per day and they do the trick.

I used to have awful acid spills and would be in agony for hours, my stress factor was through the roof, Husband and Mother terminally ill together. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.
