Have You Had Any

Nasty falls in your lifetime, that resulted in injury, or even being hospitalised?

Only once when I slipped on an icy pavement, landed bang on my back and cracked my head on the pavement. That hurt but I was okay.

Another time was quite funny … I lost my balance on the shed roof and fell in the water butt but fortunately, my bum plugged me from falling straight in.

Once only when I came off my motorbike and dislocated my RH scaphoid joint. A trip to the local A&E was needed to reset it.

High from out of a tree as a lad and I needed stiches in a leg. From that day onwards, I have always refrained from climbing trees. Trees will never see my face again …oh, I feel a song coming on

Three years ago my wife suffered a very serious spine injury from a fall in her shower when she fell onto the hand held shower head. That put her in hospital spine unit where she had an operation to put metal work inside her to repair her spine.

Yes, last year on holiday. I trip on a kerb and fell face down onto stone chippings. It was 20 minutes before I could get up, I had cuts and bruises on my forehead, nose, lips, chin, arms and legs. On top of that the lens on my new glasses were badly scratched. If I hadn’t been wearing my glasses, I would probably damaged my eyes.

This happened on the third day of our holiday and I was shaky for the rest of the fortnight.

Only when I fell out of a tree when I was about 8. Broken wrist, just reset in plaster.
Had various hospital visits with football injuries but none from falls :+1:

5 years ago I fractured my knee, I was around the corner from our house and there’s a concrete bollard in the path just before the road to stop cars going up the back of the houses. I was walking berry and I wasn’t looking where I was going and fell over the bollard and landed on my right knee. Had to have a full leg plaster to stop me from bending my leg and making the fracture worse. Didn’t need a operation but had to have the plaster on for 6 weeks, then a knee brace on for another 6 weeks and once a week have it ajusted so that I could bend my knee a little bit more. Then I had phisio once a week for 6 weeks.

I was on the way to work when I was 15. Going down a backroad on my motorcycle I hit a truck bed from the side. The truck wasn’t moving. Long story short guy had a fight with wife had been drinking and got in his truck and floored it in reverse. Putting him directly in my path I was going 50mph when I hit him. I flew down the road and wound up with a compound fracture of the tibia and fibula of the right leg. I also broke my right thumb, but was unaware for 3 days. I had 3 sperate operation to correct the leg. The last one thankfully being successful. Now I only limp when I get tired (according to my ex-wife it’s hardly noticeable then).

It’s happened to me twice. Once when I was about 3, I tried to emulate my father leaning into a corner on his motorbike. Unfortunately, my trike just tipped over, breaking my elbow and it hasn’t been quite right ever since.
The other was around 12 years ago when my son tripped me up while holding my arms and I landed on quarry tiles hip first, breaking it. That was a slightly longer stay in hospital and a much longer recovery.

:weary::tired_face::weary:…you poor people. A big “ OUCH”…Mags, your holiday must have been ruined,:pensive:

I have done a lot of hiking, scrambling, peak bagging and a bit of easy climbing in the Peak District, Lake District, Scottish Highlands, summer & winter, but the only accident I had wasn’t really on the hills
It was on a rough stone track or lane walking into the hills on a lovely sunny day, I turned briefly as I was walking to look at the view, and caught the toe of my boot on a stone
I went absolutely head first, flat on my face, like something out of Tom & Jerry, and my glasses went flying

Fortunately at the last minute I managed to prevent my face from slamming into the rocks, but I banged my left knee on a rock, and it soon swelled up like a grapefruit and I could hardly bend it
Then it was just a question of waiting patiently and hoping for the best
I didn’t need any plaster or bandages and it did eventually heal, but it took weeks & months.

That’s the most serious accident I’ve had, and so far I haven’t broken any bones

A few. The worst was in 2000. I got a call around 7:00 pm on a Sunday evening - it was a paper mill in Scotland. They were having a machine problem. I told them that I would go to my office and get the drawings out. It was a nice evening so I went on my bike and it is shorter to my office anyway.

The road down was just newly tarmacked. Nice. Except it was too fast and I fell quite badly and fell unconscious. By then there was a crowd and an ambulance. I woke up and dismissed the ambulance. It was still in my brain that I had to sort the customer’s problem. So off I went to the office.

We worked out what the problem was and they thanked me for that. By then I was pretty uncomfortable so I asked for an ambulance. None for an hour to I set off to the hospital, I had a few funny looks - my shirt was torn and I was still bleeding.

I got there and waited for the inevitable queue. Several cuts and a dislocated shoulder.Back home at 0200.

A fun day…

I tripped over a cardboard box the other day and fell into the corner of the table. I now have a bruise the size of the UK on my leg. It hurts

Thanks Chillie6 No not really, when I had it in plaster it didn’t hurt. It was inconvenient because I soon wanted to plant my summer bedding out but it had to wait, but it caught up. I was walking around with it for 2 days thinking that it was bruised until I went to the doctor for something else and she said I should have it x-rayed.

Nah … they’ll put a wooden spike through you to ensure you stay inside :smiling_imp::wink:

Oh dear, have you had it checked PixieKnuckles?

No Logan, I haven’t. I know I ought to, but my dr is on maternity leave and I really don’t have time (I know, I know) to chase after doctors who don’t really want to see you in the first place. Its a sad state of affairs. I can walk perfectly fine on it though, so I’m taking that as a good sign
