Reminds me of how I once won a game of bingo in an arcade when I was 8 and on holiday in Hastings, and my prize was a torch.

No, I have a number of Chinese speaking friends and know a few words and expressions that is all, I definitely can’t read it. I got that the same way as you but backwards.
One thing that makes me laugh is Mandarin and Cantonese speakers trying to talk to each other, it usually ends in fits of giggles and English, yet the written language is the same. There is also the added complication of local dialect, for example my Malaysian friend speaks Hoikken at home, she also speaks Mandarin, Bahasa and English - I feel like a right dunce.
