Harbal!!
It was that fuzzy slide guitar echo effect that immediately let you know it was the Glitter Band. A sound very different to other bands whether the effect is liked or not. I didnāt mind it.
He was my neighbour and do not remember when he arrived but he went to Davidson Senior School at the same time as my late friend Rosiās older Brother, Paul/Gary was a older than me as Rosiās Brother would be about 77 years old had he lived. He played music all day long with his slash window pushed up, just remember passing his house and never stopping, but I was a very shy kid, so not thinking he was strange, but then I never actually saw him, well I donāt re-call seeing him and it was only Rosiās Brother that talked about him when the trouble eruptedā¦Stretton Road Croydon we lived and his name was also Paul Raven/Gadd/Russell. I know he was a teenager at least when he arrived but just shocks and upsets me like it would to most, likewise Jimmy Savile and Rolf Harrisā¦sure many others of course but I just needed to write that upā¦
Reading this thread reminded me of another ādisgraced celebrityā, Rolf Harris. He was imprisoned following being found guilty 12 indecent assaults against females of varying ages, that was called child abuse in this newspaper article. After serving three years of a six-year sentence he was released four yearsā ago.
Separating the person from the offences is difficult but his art on many TV programmes was really brilliant I reckon. Such a shame that he didnāt just stick to art and television. It seems his life is not very good following release though. As an 89-year-old he has diabetes and is almost a recluse in his $9million mansion home, caring for his wife, whose health is declining as she has Alzheimerās:
We went to a Glitter gig at the NEC well before all the kerfuffle about kiddy fiddling blew up as we were still living in Rome and had come back for a holiday over Christmas.
It was so bad it was funny to listen to and watch - even many in the crowd were dressed up as members of the Glitter Band and as GG himself.
Saville and Glitter always looked pervy to me but Rolf was a shock.
Same here I have to say, Saville was a shock too when it all came out. Garry Glitter always looked like he was a bitā¦psycho?
Me too Pixie. The Glitter band was superb. āIām the leader, Iām the leaderā¦ā
Dāya wanna be in my gang, my gang my gang?
I am so disappointed. When I saw the thread title I was expecting to read he was dead.
well he is inhuman PooBearā¦
But he is not inhuman, there are too many other humans like him for that to be true. Of course, most of them donāt make the abominable noise that he does, but that is little consolation in the context of what they do do.
He ought to be!
I agree LQ. Plus I feel sorry for the rest of the Glitter band who I would imagine have suffered financially because of his actions.
Donāt tell me they didnāt know of his proclivities.
The BBC knew about Jimmy Savile but turned a blind eye to it probably because of all the money he raised PooBearā¦
They may never have seen his proclivities, he probably had his own dressing room.
I think their reason was probably even less creditable than that, Foxy; they didnāt want the scandal, or the backlash of public opinion had it gone wrong and Savile come out of it looking wronged.
There was no way Savile would have come out of it looking wronged because if you was one of the people that followed the Savile inquiry, you would have seen that numerous female teenagers had complained to the BBC about being inappropriately touched by Savile and nothing was done, the BBC dismissed the teenagers claims. If the heads at the BBC had done their jobs properly, Savile would have been sacked long before he became very famous. If you had heard the testimonies from the original women who were the teenagers who made the complaints to the BBC, when the BBC dismissed their claims, they felt the police would do the same hence they never made an official complaint to the police.
During the Savile inquiry, every single person that was employed by the BBC all said the same thing, all they heard was ārumoursā. Whatās worse is that people who are still with the BBC today or still have their careers knew what Savile and Glitter were up to but they kept quiet for the sake of their own careers. Yeah thatās right, actors, actresses and musicians allowed those two to carry on molesting children to protect their own TV/music careers.
There is an interview of John Lydon with Piers Morgan where Lydon goes on to talk about knowing what Savile and others were up to but sayās he was prevented from talking. Actually, Lydon did nothing. He says he knew what these people were up to but did he go to the police ? NO, did he act as a whistleblower and give the inside story to one of the major newspapers so they could investigate? NO. Like with all the other media people, they kept quiet for the sake of their careers and teenage girls had to suffer for it.
Saw GG perform at uni. Mildly entertaining.
Think heās been in the news recently due to Jim Davison having visited him in prison, and subsequently losing some theatre bookings.
