Freecycle and Freegle

I wonder if any of you have used the above?
I’m seriously tempted to give it a go!

The positives in my opinion are passing on unwanted bits and pieces to someone who might appreciate them and vice versa.

As for the negatives I don’t want any chav junk!

To be honest, I’m seriously after some demijohns as well as some decent jars and bottles at the moment.
I might just register, yeah why not!

Never knew anything about this, just looked up our local one, you can even ask for what you would like.

How did you come to know about this?

I couldn’t believe what some were giving away, looked really good quality stuff.

I really can’t remember pauline.
I think Freecycle was common knowledge but like many other things took a hit during the COVID crisis.

I’ve already got the Freegle app on my phone it’s just a case of taking the plunge and registering.
All things considered I’m going to give it a go :slightly_smiling_face:

Oh I do like Freecycle & Freegle…well I like the sound of them. I haven’t used them for years, and even then it was to offload some books and craft stuff that I had accumulated. The only thing I would advise is to do your swapping or gifting in a public place. Don’t have people coming round to yours, because they will stay for ages checking out your “other” stuff and asking if you are getting rid of it as well…!

At risk of being perceived as cynical nobody comes into my home unless I’m Ok with the situation.
Very sound advice Pixie :+1:

We did a similar with Freemarket place. We had a few hundred bricks we didn’t need. Within a day two people collected them - a large van and a Rangerover took the whole lot.

See, it’s a good job I don’t drive, or know anyone with a van! My garden would be chock a block with everyone else’s stuff they don’t want! I’ve already got a few pallets in there for making into stuff

Yes.
I have used Freecycle quite often in the past.
Mainly to pass on things I no longer wanted but were too big or not suitable to take to a charity shop.

When I was downsizing into a new house, I passed on a lot of old unwanted furniture.
When I was clearing my Mum’s house, I passed on most of her furniture and household items I couldn’t use - iron, ironing board, saucepans, cutlery, crockery, even bedlinen in good condition.
It is amazing what some people will find a use for.

The most unusual re-cycling I was involved in was when I advertised the walk-in shower cubicle which I removed from the bathroom of a house I moved into.
It was one of those shower trays for wheelchair users - instead of being full height, the sliding door and surrounding splash panels were low enough to enable a Carer to stand outside the shower tray and stay dry while reaching over the nearly waist height splash panel to help the person inside to wash and shower.
There was nothing wrong with it but it was a bit old so I wasn’t sure if anyone would want it - however it seemed a shame to throw it away.
I got an immediate response to my Ad - when the chap arrived to collect it, we chatted a while and I discovered he wasn’t going to be using it as a shower for a disabled person.
He told me he had 3 energetic Springer Spaniels who got very muddy when out walking, so he was creating a Doggy Shower in his downstairs utility room for them - the large shower tray with the low splash protective surround was just what he’d been looking for to stop the dogs spraying water all over him and the floor when they shook themselves while he was showering them and drying them off!

Chilli, you aren’t going to believe this, I just got a message, from freegle ,they are picking them up tomorrow afternoon…:+1::+1:…she did say what she wanted them for, something to do with her rabbits digging holes.

I must tell my friend about this, she’s always leaving stuff outside her gate for free.

This takes me back. I used freecycle back in the noughties when it first appeared. I think it was a yahoo group back then. I gave away an aquarium but had to drive across town myself because the guy who wanted it didn’t have a car.

Then I wanted a piano someone was giving away but was asked to arrange piano movers & tuners plus it’s location was on the third floor in some hard to reach flat. So I lost the will to live after that. As I had never had a piano I had no idea that it’s really important for professionals to move it so that it works after the move. It’s a bit like when friends gave me their old car and it cost me more to fix all the problems (and then scrap it) than to buy a new car.

The one thing you have to be careful with is security. If you invite someone to pick up your freebie be careful you are not on your own and don’t let them scope out your house. If you go to a property to pick something up take someone with you or make sure you are on your mobile to someone who can help if anything happens.

I totally agree with you about the Security aspect.
Better safe than sorry.

Chilli, I had 3 people after those slabs.

The lady who has rabbits, apparently she has six and babies on the way, they are show rabbits, she was showing me pictures of them on her phone,…a very lovely down to earth couple, we had a good old natter, while her poor husband was loading the slabs into their car…they were so grateful for them, they went to someone who really needed them…:+1:

I’ve just put a bird aviary on there as well…:+1:

Not used it/them, but …

We buy/sell, give/take on Nextdoor website. Demijohns, things like that, get given away normally. You can ask, or just search the For Sale & Free section regularly.
