Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (2008)

The series is based on the original novel by Robert A. Heinlein, a master of the old school genre. Not as good as the original, but a step up from the sequel. It gets 6.5 out of 10 stars.

Gods of Egypt (2016)

A CGI-fest focusing on the lands of ancient Egypt and their mythos of gods. It’s not Shakespeare but could be with all the palace backstabbing that goes on. If you only want a distraction full of eyecandy, this one will fill the bill. 6 out of 10.

One in the Chamber (2012)

A rather hum-drum action flick that matches up two hitmen against each other. Mediocre at best, only a 5 outta 10 score.

Shaft’s Big Score (1972)

Shaft takes on the Italian and Black mobs to find a missing $250,000 and return it to a widow. Decent action, some great helicopter stunts and plenty of sexual energy oozing from Richard Roundtree. It gets a 6.

Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

A remake of the 1960 Rat Pack favorite. This one has more of a Vegas 60s vibe than the original. All All-Star cast takes on the toughest casino owner and looks to empty his pockets of $160 million in a single night. Excellent chemistry between the cast, especially Clooney and Pitt. This gets an 8 out of 10.

Scream Blacula Scream (1973)

Reprising the leading role from the 1972 movie Blacula, William Marshall puts some soul into the soulless undead master. Pam Grier (Jackie Brown 1997), Michael Conrad (Hill Street Blues) and Richard Lawson (Poltergeist 1982) all give excellent supporting efforts. A solid gold 7 out of 10.

Here Comes the Boom (2012)

Kevin James plays a former teacher of the year that has lost his inspiration for teaching. In the hopes of saving a friend’s (Henry Winkler) teaching job, he transforms from a mild-mannered Biology teacher to a fighter in the MMA. Looking to raise $48k to save the music program, James looks to simply participate in the matches to get paid the loser’s portion of the take. Proving that people can accomplish anything they set their minds to do, James eventually gets to the UFC just when the wheels come completely off his wagon. Forced now to actually pull off the upset victory, James must now either win or go home a complete failure. An inspirational movie everyone can enjoy. 8 out of 10.

Ocean’s 12 (2004)

The sequel to the 2001 hit, the crew is tracked down by their previous mark and forced to either repay the money they stole + interest ($198 million in two weeks). Too hot to pull another job in America, Ocean’s Eleven is forced to go to Europe to look for work. None of the jobs they attempt make any sense as they spend more to do the job than the value of what they are attempting to steal. The weakest of the series, this movie was as forced as the jobs they pull. A pathetic 6 out of 10.

Groundhog Day (1993)

Bill Murray plays the role of a self-centered, egocentric prick who is a Weatherman for a local Pittsburgh TV affiliate assigned to cover Punxsutawney Phil on Groundhog Day. Since this is Murray’s natural demeanor, he pulls off the role swimmingly. However, fate throws him a curveball and puts him into a perpetual time loop where he is forced to live the day over and over again. Only the brilliant writing and directing skills of Harold Ramis allows for a transformation of Murray’s character to that of an actual human being. It gets a 9 out of 10.

A League of Their Own (1992)

The Hollywood version of the AAGPBL (All-American Girls Professional Baseball League 1943-1954) which was started up when MLB players began being drafted to fight in WWII. This is a part of history many don’t know, or don’t remember. The cast can actually play the game, field, throw and hit unlike many other baseball movies starring men (Major League, I’m looking at you!). It gets a solid 8 out of 10.

Watched the two parter Agatha Christie “Murder Is Easy”. Not very impressed! Quite a weak plot and some weak characters. It seemed to die after Penelope Wilton.

Romeo Must Die (2000)

A re-telling of the classic Romeo & Juliet storyline told in the modern-era of Oakland California. Two rival families face off to control the waterfront property of the port city for the potential incoming of an NFL expansion team (this was after the Oakland Raiders had left the town for the 2nd time).Jet Li stars as the new Romeo as he woos the black daughter of the rival organized crime boss. This was one of the first Hollywood movies to incorporate wire-work in their martial arts action scenes and the poor execution of it is rather apparent. Overall, the movie gets a 7 out of 10.

House of Frankenstein (1944)

Universal brings back their Big Three horror icons for an all-star monster mash. This time Karloff keeps off the make-up and takes the role of the mad scientist as he resurrects Dracula (John Carradine), the Frankenstein Monster (Glenn Strange) and even the Wolfman (Lon Chaney Jr.). A solid 7 out of 10.

A Shot in the Dark (1964)

Technically, the second film in the original Pink Panther series, A Shot in the Dark was originally a play where Blake Edwards wrote in the character of Inspector Clouseau to give Peter Sellers an original part to play. This movie was actually finished before The Pink Panther, but was released a few months after it. Sellers gives a spectacular performance as only he could. A comedy classic. 8 out of 10 minkeys. :monkey:

Ocean’s Thirteen (2007)

The cumulation of the trilogy, the final movie fixes everything that was wrong with the previous one. The dead weight of Catherine Zeta-Jones and Julia Roberts are absent with the new additions of Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin bringing a new dimension to the production. Clooney, Pitt and Damon all shine. This time, the heist makes sense, flows and tops even the accomplishment of the 3-Casino heist from the original. IMO, the best of the series. A 9 out of 10 diamonds.

Avenging Angelo (2002)

Stallone plays a mafia bodyguard charged with protecting the mob boss’s daughter from assassination in retaliation for murders that the boss sanctioned. Stallone seems hamstrung and never really develops the character and Stowe plays a woman who goes from innocent bystander to Mafioso hard-case just too easily. This could have been much, much more with a different director (who never worked with Stallone again) or if Stallone had been given the reigns with the writing, production or direction. This only gets 6 out of 10 stars.

Interstellar for the11th time :100:

The Big Lebowski (1998)

One of the all-time cult classic films of my generation. Jeff Bridges plays the role of The Dude with John Goodman playing the part of the his demented Vietnam veteran best friend. The movie is just one one-liner after another and is one of the leading meme generators on the Internet. Beverages flow and bowling balls roll as The Dude just tries to make it through his life without everyone else complicating it. Make yourself a “Caucasian,” sit back and enjoy. It gets a 7 out of 10.

Batman Returns (1992)

The 2nd movie in original Batman movie franchise. Tim Burton and Michael Keaton reunite again to bring the Dark Knight back to the silver screen. This time the Caped Crusader is double teamed by the Penguin (Danny DeVito) and Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer). Both characters leave much on the table and are in no was as good of a recreation as Jack’s Joker. Christopher Walken brings more cowbell to the flick by playing the role of the evil corporate CEO who likes to manipulate things behind the scenes. A step down from the original, Batman Returns only gets 7 out of 10.
