Does the BBC think people are dumb!?

This story from the BBC does not once mention that the profits of supermarkets like Tesco have TRIPLED since the pandemic!!! It’s corporate greed that has driven prices up and has kept them there. No wonder people trust the BBC less and less, they’re just there to manufacture consent and push (miss)information for the ruling class…

COVID was a green light for corporations to screw over / fleece consumers unlike anything we have ever seen in every country .

Sad reflection of corporations but not surprising

Same here, I notice continuous price increases every time I go to the supermarket! Compared to this time last year, many items up 50%!

Not just the supermarkets but also their suppliers - all of them used the post-pandemic shortages to hike costs and prices. There was genuine inflation but there was also price gouging. All news channels have been weak on highlighting this, not just the beeb.
My other gripe with the BBC news is that they really simplify things and seem to want to explain the simplest concepts in the most basic way. “Inflation is when prices go up. So even if the inflation rate reduces a little, prices are still going up because, look, there is still inflation.” Honestly, it is as if they trying to communicate to the very dumbest TV news audience. Which is not needed as those people watch GBNews.
By the way, who is Miss Information? She sounds very knowledgeable.

I find the BBC which I get here as have every channel ( satellite dish package ) superior to the USA as far as International news but in other ways similar

Agreed, the BBC does do excellent international news. So does the UK Sky News (do not confuse with other Sky News) and Al Jazeera. Definitely watch Al Jazeera if you want your comfortable western perspectives challenged. And as will all news, keep a pinch of salt at hand.

@Azz IMO for what it’s worth, the BBC simply follow the unwritten guidelines laid down by their puppet masters, the government of the day. Again IMO, it is about time the BBC was defunded of all income derived from the public via the licence fee and taxation from the government, and made to survive as other broadcasters do. I watch very little TV and what I do tune in to is not the BBC.

My instinct is to disagree with the defunding notion for the BBC. I do enjoy watching TV without adverts and ad revenue would be the only option if the licence fee and government funding was taken away. I do agree that the BBC often ends up being guided by the government of the day - but its also “guided” by newspapers and other opinion formers. The Mail and the Express are often very good at stirring up vitriol against something the BBC has broadcast when it suits their own narrative.
The cost to the UK public is small. I’d think the benefit is reasonable high as public service broadcaster. But I’d also think we should expect the frequent outrage that comes with being a public service broadcaster when something broadcast does not align with some folks political or cultural views. But if its just ad revenue supported then we’d end up with Fox News and game shows. If its ad revenue driven then its not long before its sold off into shareholder hands. Then guess who sets the guidelines? And what are the chances that they serve the aims of the shareholders rather than the nation?

I willing pay the license fee to be advert free on the Beeb .
Maybe that makes me dumb.

Not at all.

However, for example, ITVX can be ad free for around £5pcm, if one is willing to pay. As are some other streaming services.

So, IMHO, it can’t be that difficult to make the BBC ad-free if one is prepared to pay for it, and “free” if one isn’t and instead is happy to have ads.

This would mean that for the same outlay as a TV licence, you could be ad free on BBC, ITV and probably Channel 4 or 5. This would surely improve the quality of output due to competition.

Some of the ads resonate more than the main tele, unless you are a “No Junk Mail” person who feels defiled by adverts
