Does anyone use a pedometer?

That’s interesting Cass , I don’t really want an ‘all singing all dancing’ job that tells me how much I eat and breath just how much I walk. By my own calculations I know I walk over a mile a day in the fields and I am being conservative.

Hi ruthio, its a tanita 3axes,bought it in either argos or boots for about £20.
Carol, not sure how it works but it does !

Thanks cinnamon and Meg, I reckon that one’ll do me

I had one a few years back, but couldn’t get on with it, it’s probably still at the back of the drawer somewhere now.

I found it difficult to work out my pace first, then it only worked on flat level ground, it wouldn’t register if I walked across a field or rough ground. I assume because your pace alters completely from pavements to fields.

Ooops if that is the case I am sunk Mups  it’s all hills and fields here

Don’t give up Meg, I expect there’s much better ones out nowadays. Although I can sort of understand that if you set it for one pace and then your pace changes alot, it might throw the results out wrong.

I’ve had a FitBit Flex for two years. FitBit makes a bunch of different devices depending how elaborate you want to get. The Flex is a simple wrist bracelet. I’ve learned to put it on with my glasses in the morning. It tracks sleep if you want. I sleep fitfully and medicated so I take it off at night. The Flex is low tech, just keep it charged every few days. I’m on my feet at work, then I walk the pups at night. Between both I make my step goal pretty easy most days. They have good customer service support too.

If you carry a smartphone while travelling the distances, then installing MapMyRun might be an option. I have used it for measuring the distances of the walks and bike rides I do.

Our local council started organising ‘Health Walks’ a few years ago. They are very good as you can choose between easy short walks or longer more difficult ones. They gave pedometers to all who signed up - but - the were so complicated to use - you had to input your age, weight, height, how many teeth your grandma had - plus they only did kilometers - not miles.

Mine is probably still at the back of the ‘these will be useful one day’ drawer in the kitchen.

My son purchased one of those for all his staff members because they spend a lot of time sitting down. There was a competition each week to see who had taken the most exercise  I think the initial enthusiasm has waned.

Mart  I don’t have a smart phone  if I did I don’t think I would risk taking it walking. I know someone who has dropped theirs 3 times so far this year smashing the screen and they are expensive to replace.

Hmmmmm good point :frowning:
I was thinking of getting MapMyRun or something similar so ‘he’ could use it when running BUT I can imagine it flying off and vanishing into undergrowth, lakes, muddy puddles … :frowning:

Mmmm  you could get ‘him’ a pedometer

Think he’s got one … dunno but he thought this programme looked good, cos it does STUFF.
Boys and their toys eh

A cautionary tale about the moves made during a run too. Towards the end our ride, we normally cycle along a canal bank. There’s an entrance into the park from there and we divert to the park to eat lunch before carrying on with the ride.

This was the first time I’d used MapMyRide so I was messing around a bit to see how detailed the route was. After eating, my brother was packing some food boxes into his saddlebag and while I was waiting for him, I rode around in a circle and other variations. This was all very well until I zoomed in on the diversion into the park and the messing around bits I’d done. Then it possibly could be seen as a bit rude, especially if viewed upside down. I’ll leave it as a link just in case it’s thought it is…

The worst part was that I’d shown this to the barmaid in the pub while talking about how MapMyRide worked. I hadn’t had any thoughts about the shape at the time. I hope she didn’t either.

That’s something you do notice. One feature of FitBit is being able to make a virtual list of people to compete with. I have more than 200 people on my list and maybe a quarter if not more have dropped off along the way. A pedometer of any kind isn’t going to make you get up and go. It takes inner motivation too.

Well the Pedometer arrived along with the rain  so I can’t really put it to the test.
It was quite easy but frustrating to set up, all that fast clicking through to get to the bit I wanted with digits too small to read.
I also confused the dog measuring my stride

We will see how it goes, I don’t intend wearing it in the house and garden (where I walk miles watering plants) just on walks.

Again, I found my didn’t work around the house Meg. If you set it up for a certain stride, then your stride alters, how can it sgtill measure accurately?
I say this, because I certainly don’t walk around the house at the same pace I’d set it for an outside walk.

Mine works in the house Mups  but because I take smaller steps it won’t be so accurate I guess. I don’t want to use it in the house so it doesn’t matter.

I am delighted with my pedometer  a NAKOSITE (£11.99 from Amazon) and surprised to find I walk over 2 miles every day on my walks with Chloe and over 1 mile a day around the house and garden

It is certainly an incentive to walk more
