a 30% improvement would make the NHS almost tolerable.

When was the last time you saw your doctor face to face .

30% they’ve gotta be kidding !

I get the distinct impression many of you do not know what is involved and how long it takes to become a qualified Medical Doctor and then the extra years to specialise.

One of my late maternal side relations went from FE college to medical school for 5ys which included some hands-on training. She was interested in emergency medicine so went on for a further 2yrs study then 2yrs GP locum work. Then as she wanted to specialise in paediatric emergency medicine, a further 3yrs extra was needed before she could take up a junior hospital EM post at 30. Unfortunately she did not make it to retirement age as she dropped dead single and childless at 55 from a silent heart condition that was impossible to detect. Her whole adult life was dedicated to sick children so from my point of view, many hospital based doctors deserve a decent income!

Hi

There are an awful lot of different groups threatening strike action at the moment.

The Government have not handled the situation very well at all.

They announced pay restraint for millions on the same day that they announced the removal of the limit on bonus payments to Bankers.

They announced that Pensions would rise by the same amount as inflation but not the pay of many workers.

Not very well organised are they.

Big difference here though Swimmy. The bankers are privatised and they aren’t paid out of the public purse.

The irony is the majority of Drs (and a lot of nurses) aren’t exclusive to the NHS, they are working for private hospitals where they get paid more more money. The kicker is that they want 30% more so they can do the same paid job they do in the private sector in the NHS - pretty disgusting really, considering they don’t want the NHS privatised but they want the money from the private sector all the same. They can’t have it both ways, especially when the public have paid for their tuition and bursaries.

We should just privatise the whole NHS, its never worked well and never will.

I suppose people start high in demanding ridiculous pay rises , then that allows for them to climb down a little later on, so making them look as if they are willing to compromise.
Bit like estate agents pricing top asking price first, knowing they will never get it, but it allows them to accept less later, and still keep face.

I agree with Bread though, and more money = needs better service first.
More like they will do the same as the trains though, and if they don’t get it, they’ll threaten to strike.

How would we go about privatising the NHS…?

@swimfeeders ls that right Swimmy ? You say the government has removed
restrictions on bankers bonuses, and bread says the bankers are pivate and
are not paid out of the public purse ??
How can the government control the bankers then ??
BTW, As the bankers greed caused the last big financial crash shouldnt their
greed be permanently controlled by something ??
Donkeyman! :thinking::thinking::thinking:

Hi

Here you go.

The bonus cap is here to stay… for now.

The bankers were rescued by public money in the financial crash, we have still not recovered all of that money.

Landmark £1.2 billion share sale sees Government stake in NatWest Group reduced to below 50% for first time since financial crisis - GOV.UK.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of the situation, even a demented hedgehog would have known it was not a good idea to announce huge rises for some of the highest paid in the Country in the same week that Cabinet Ministers and the Governor of the Bank of England announced that the vast majority of workers would have to take below Inflation pay rises and that State Pensioners would get full inflation proof rises.

A godsend for the Unions in their us and them battle.

Also not good for the Government was clapping the NHS every week during the pandemic and staff nurses now having to use Food Banks.

It is a PR disaster for the Government.

|It’s the same the whole world over: It’s the poor what gets the blame. It’s the rich what gets the pleasure; Ain’t it all a bloomin’ shame.|

but the trains will save us time and the doc our lives???

I read the other day, that the not long ago, the NHS had tried to recruit another 2,000 doctors from overseas. Only 155 were taken on, but 31 of those have since left again.
So out of 2,000 jobs available, we are only 124 doctors better off - just 6% of the NHS target.

Why are GP’s leaving in droves? Why does no one want to be a doctor anymore?

Haven’t read any articles on this, but heard a doctor on the radio this morning and the 30% isn’t straight away, it’s over a five year period.

The main reason they’re striking is due to being ordered to work on Saturdays and until 8 in the evening.

I haven’t seen anything about them striking, Wendeey?
When I said earlier about if they don’t get the extra money, they will be threatening strikes next, I didn’t know this had actually been said now?

This article has figures and seems like it’s a worldwide problem:

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: “We are grateful to all those who have come from abroad to work in our fantastic NHS and social care sector. Internationally trained staff have been part of the NHS since its inception in 1948 and continue to play a vital role.

“While we are absolutely delighted that these doctors have chosen to work in the NHS, we know that the world is struggling to train, employ and retain a sufficient and skilled health workforce. We have therefore committed £20m towards programmes to strengthen the health workforce in a small number of developing countries.”

That’s OK employing doctors from abroad, if their training has been the same as UK docs have to have here. After all, there seems to be very few English people want the job anymore.

The other thing that bothers me is, some of the foreign doctors (and nurses) I can’t always understand. I was trying to talk to a cardiologist recently, and I had to keep asking him to repeat things. It is embarrassing on both sides I should think.
I get on a bit better face to face, that helps, but over the phone I often can’t make head nor tail of what they are saying.
Why do they often talk so bloomin’ fast??

Just as an aside, there are similar problems in the veterinary profession too!

Mups I’m the same, I’m awful with accents, but that’s not just people from abroad that’s regional accents as well.
