Do you/have you ignore(d) your name when you hear someone calling out to you?

When I moved to Perth from Tasmania, I was at the train Station and someone started shouting out my then nickname quite loudly.
I left Tassie because the home town people were real pricks to me and I wanted nothing to do with anyone from there.
I was virtually run out of town because I was constantly being beaten every time I went out for a drink.
So I never turned around, never acknowledged, kept walking.
I want nothing to do with my home town residents

That’s a sad story. Why did they pick on you?

I’m often being caught out by thinking people are talking to me but they are just on their phone. :grinning:

I was a pathetic alcoholic with no self esteem.
Bullies zero in on such people in the hopes of impressing fellow bullies.
Scum the lot of them.

So you’ve never been tempted to go back and show off the new you? :grinning:

I have often thought of going back, knocking on certain doors and blowing their heads off.
Decided that would only see me in prison. So no going back for me.

That’s awful Bret. Alcoholism is an illness/addiction which some people are more susceptible to catching than others. Luckily, with the right mindset and possibly help, one can recover from it.

I had a nickname based on my surname that I never really liked, so I discouraged the use of it when I got older. I never ignored it though. My friends from back then don’t use the nickname anymore and seem OK with that.

Thinking about it, a few of us had nicknames based on surnames back then but all of us still in touch use each other’s Christian names now.

On a loosely related matter, when I was young and overconfident in my mathematical abilities, I tried to get into Cambridge. The letter of rejection was addressed to Mr Swidders (which is not entirely accurate spelling by a long stretch).

To this day, I tell others that I suspect that there is a Mr Swidders out there somewhere who received a letter of acceptance which was meant to be sent to me.

That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it :grimacing::grimacing::grimacing:

I have a friend who was an alcoholic , he is a millionaire now due to inventions , incredibly bright guy but suffered from depression , I do not know if that goes away but he no longer drinks .

He was telling me that soon AI will be doing the inventions but he is in his late 60s so he caught the time when humans did .

Being a fish and nature fanatic he has a beach house which is unreal and you walk a block or so and what a lagoon with lots damselfish , anemones , etc but yes no home insurance as insurance for most part no longer cover beach front homes but he has so much money he could not care less .

Think his inventions were in aviation and health care and he has no degree in either but incredibly bright guy .

That is quite a story, Bretwick. The win is yours because you summited a mountain of recovery.

As for replying to one’s name, anytime and anywhere, I hear, “Mom” my brain shifts into helper mode, responding as if I am going to have to help someone find a missing shoe or make them lunch. It’s not an easy moniker to deprogram .
