They might even have opinions different to yours Azz…
Shouldn’t we embrace all of humanity on this forum, not just those we agree with.
Exactly. That is why the Telegraph and the Mail swing wildly to the left to become socialist rags as soon as Labour gets into power. And the Guardian becomes a raging right wing red top when the Tories get into government. Happens all the time like clockwork.
Seems to me that within the media, networks are so intent on being the first with ‘Breaking News’, that they don’t bother to double check details before it airs to the general public.
Yesterday was a prime example with the report of Anne Widdecombe’s death, which initially led us all to believe she had died from ‘natural causes’, or a short illness.
And i would be curious to know who supplied them with the report that Anne Widdecombe had ‘died’.
The fact that the the police had launched a murder investigation, was a complete shock, and something we should have known much earlier.
In their haste to write her obituary, they even got the year of her birth wrong, which flashed up on the screen as being 1974 - 2026.
Sloppy reporting.
Hi
Sudden deaths, there is a procedure.
First on scene are normally Uniform Police.
They have instructions, a quick check to determine if they are alive.
Paramedics called if not already alerted.
Uniform seal the Scene and wait for Senior Investigating Officer to arrive.
Pathologist called, examines body at the site, determines Cause of Death if possible, estmates time of death and determines if the person died at the scene or if the body has been moved.
The Pathologist also examines the body to see if there are any identifying effects or tattoos etc.
The next steps have recently been changed so as to release as much information as soon as possible in order to stop protests being encouraged by Social Media.
In particular details about anyone arrested, age, sex, ethnicity, terrorist indicators etc.
Innocent people have been attacked due to misinformation.
Just another example of the Police being damned if they do or damned if they don’t.
Police procedure isn’t in question.
How the media interpret ‘facts,’ their poor standard of reporting, and their haste to get whatever news they have out there before anyone else, is questionable.
To be fair to the press / media, if all the information they had was that Ann Widdecombe was found dead, and they knew she was pretty old, then that is what they reported. They did not say she was murdered because nobody had informed them of that, nor did they say she died peacefully in her sleep, or knocked over by a bus. They reported what they knew without speculation. Why is that a bad thing?
I could have my timeline of events wrong here but at some stage it changed from ‘found dead at home’ to ‘murder’.
Had the police made an official statement?
Even so …I still think they rush like a mob to be the first to change their online headline.
At least when there was only a paper version subject to late deadlines they had wiggle room.
Police procedure. IS. Extrapolationaly Aware.
Of not Replicating
The Jill Dando.[Totally Unjustified] Affair.
27 years later. And still. Unresolved. !!
That sounds correct. The first info was found dead and this was reported. The second bit of info came a bit later and that was reported. Would it have been better if the reporters to wait for confirmation of cause of death? Or better if the police to only make an announcement to the press once they had the full info?
I actually cannot see a problem here by the news reporters. No false reporting. No speculation. Just an inevitable step by step feed of information.
I think, for me at least … it was how quick they said they’d arrested a man… rather than a man was helping them with their enquiries but an arrest. I guess with such a high profile victim the pressure would be on to show some progress quite quick.
As long as they get the proper person for it, not just rush to pin it on who is easiest. I don’t trust the police these days their getting it wrong too many times lately. Last was that kid who was knifed and killed by that horror who was yelling he had been racially abused. Load of tripe and the kid lay dying while the police slammed the cuffs on him.
Hmm…I don’t trust the Police much these days either and it wouldn’t surprise Me if They can’t find the so called ‘murderer’,They’ll decide that Anne wasn’t ‘bludgeoned to death’ after all and it was all just a terrible accident…I know…far fetched…but as I’ve said…nothing surprises Me these days.
RIP Anne.
Surely the media have a responsibility to report the news as efficiently and as accurately as they can, especially with such a high profile (and controversial) character as Anne Widdicombe, preventing as much speculation as possible.
My first thought when hearing of her death, was that maybe she fell, or had a heart attack.
As it turned out, the truth was much more sinister, and if media had held back, and had not been involved in a race with other networks, to inform us of her death, we would have known straight away that this was not a death from ‘natural causes’.
The truth is fine to report and they did just that. It’s all the other stuff they do that’s wrong.
I think so yes, particularly with such high profile politicians.
We don’t yet know if this was politically motivated but as i recall, we had the full facts of the murder of Jo Cox very early on.
I wonder whether this is something to do with all the speculation that would be/is rife in the internet? The police saying that it was a British white man who had been arrested would stop some unsavoury speculation with regards to ethnicity. Of course now he has been released without charge that speculation has a free rein again. I really hope it’s resolved soon.
Yes i hope it’s resolved soon.
The speculation i was referring too, was about the circumstances of her death - how she died, rather than the ethnicity of the man (or woman) who murdered her.
Heartbreaking news, loved her in Strictly .
The OP is up for debate, not the judicial process IMO.
I’ve created a thread about how that is happening across the board with everything in our lives as standards slip. Perhaps AI intelligence that led them to the wrong suspect…
