Covid craziness

We took our car to be serviced today. Usually they provide a shuttle service for customers to get into town. Don’t do it any more. Why not? “Covid”. So how come taxis and buses carry passengers?

Disappeared into town on bus for a few hours, had lunch and did some shopping. Didn’t have a problem paying in cash anywhere.

Got back to pay bill, £350 in cash. “We can’t take cash.” That is down to covid too he said. I said it was cash or nothing then and we had used cash all morning in shops. I told a fib and said we didn’t have cards with us. After a lengthy discussion with their finance dept he finally agreed to accept it.

Then he took us out to our car and apologised that they don’t do a free clean now …… guess what? Due to covid! My husband said “but you wash them outside in the fresh air and car washes are all operating.” That didn’t cut any ice.

I will be so pleased when all this craziness has finished and now I hear it’s going to be a month earlier. Hoorah!:clap:

Oh…I have just recently started travelling on buses due to moving out of town. There is a bus company who has chased the others out and now provide the services. They don’t give you change of your fare if you pay too much. So, say a bus fare costs £3,80, and you give them a fiver…you get NO change “due to covid”

Conversely, if you give them too much change, they don’t take it due to not having the time to count it out!

Dirty rats :bus:

Pure evil.

British Coinage Act (1971) Anything over 20p in 1p’s or 2’s not legal tender. Anything over £5 in 5p’s or 10p’s are also not legal tender. So presuming the bus fare is less than £5 & the fare is paid in no more than 20p of 1p’s or 2p’s & with no more than £5 of 5p’s or 10p’s. Then the fare is being paid with legal tender & thus, they have the right to refuse service, but would have extreme difficulty in refusing you passage, as you have offered a legal tender for that passage.

Edited to add. As an ex bus driver. I know the Police will be no help & that they can only “ask” you to get off, not force you off. As they can only legally use “reasonable force.” So refuse, don’t do anything to justify force & they are the looser.

Ok…a) I didn’t use anything less than a 20p coin…and…

b) Scottish bus drivers can refuse service, passage, and leave you face down on the pavement if they like. Just sayin’ :woman_shrugging:

Upto £10 of 20p & 50p coins are legal tender & any amount of £1 & £2 are also defined as legal tender under the British Coinage Act (1971.)

Legal tender simply means the person offering the service cannot sue you or even say you failed to pay. If you offered legal tender.

Thats fine, yes I understand.

“Ah’m still pappin’ ye aff the bus, ya wee sh***, an’ don’t be comin’ back wi’ ony o’ yer daft wee pennies fae yer piggy bank, awrite?!!”

Loads of people using Covid as an excuse for doing sweet FA. Getting anyone to actually answer the phone at British Gas etc is a nightmare

I sometimes take people to court as part of my job and I’ve once had someone turn up trying to pay in copper coins and once with £20 notes they’d wiped their bum on!

ewwww! You’d be requiring industrial PPE for that then! :face_vomiting:

Get the rubber gloves out! The magistrate gave them both a rollocking and gave the order in our favour.

I did helpfully offer to go with him to the cash point to collect some hygienic cash before the order was made and he called me a name relating to my lower lady parts!!

Just the bus drivers. They hate everyone  The rest of us are quite lovely

That’s really bad, isn’t it. We can pay on all our busses with contactless debit card, Apple Pay or Googlepay you don’t see the drivers having to deal with any cash much

It’s tough in people who’ve only got cash as a means of paying though

I didn’t know about that…I am not well versed in the Ways of the Bus. I wonder if we have that up here, it would make my life so much easier!

Trying to express your superiority with an uncivilised comment tends to undermine you somewhat. :102:

It’s time you changed your servicing garage. Our favourite collects my wife’s and delivers back when finished. I do most of mine myself except the obvious MOT, but they’ll collect and deliver for MOT too without extra charges; I cannot fault them :+1:

Well it is easier. Like I said, you rarely see the drivers here take any real money

Perhaps it’s the same where you are and that’s why your drivers are grumpy when you try to pay with cash

Personally I can’t wait to get my bus pass and not pay at all. Only a year to go!

Don’t bank on it being easy free travel. My pass is only valid from 09:30 and around that time the buses are full of pensioners who got on a stop or so before me. Twirlies used to be allowed on before the allotted time, but since the RFID chips in the newer passes, it wont work til the machine has passed 09:30.
