I daren’t look at these anymore. Its bad up here in Scotland :frowning:

I’m not trying to play down the seriousness of covid (well I suppose I am) but aren’t 135,000 deaths from covid against over 7.5 million infections dating back to March 2020 comparable to any other debilitating illness… :017:

It would depend on which debilitating illness you would wish to use for comparison.

One comparative statistic which cannot be denied is:

Almost 80,000 more people in England and Wales died last year than the preceding 5-year average, and the death toll continues to rise at a shocking rate. In 2020, the UK had one of the highest rates of excess deaths in the world, with more excess deaths per million people than most other European countries and the US.

The obvious comparison is flu but it’s not that simple:

Maybe the statistics cannot easily be denied but the reasons behind the statistics are wide-open to debate.
For example we have a large elderly population and there could be a good argument to be made that our good healthcare has been an enabler of longevity which it took an epidemic to expose.
That’s why there will be an inquiry, hopefully to provide real answers rather than rely upon speculation and statistics that do not tell the whole story.

So we are comparing the UK to many countries who are not as populated Omah?
And to say that there are 80,000 excess deaths than previous years we would be assuming that ALL deaths from covid are ‘Excess Deaths’…When you take into account that deaths from covid in the first year (March to March) was around 80,000. What about the previous deaths from the flu which was practically none existent in the winter of 2020/2021?
Some of these studies are meant to intimidate and frighten the people who take them at face value…

Still in the 30’s … :slightly_frowning_face:

That compares with 80% before restrictions were lifted on 19 July.

On buses and Tubes, Transport for London has retained mask-wearing as a condition of carriage in the capital.

However, several unions that represent transport workers say they are concerned that there has been a drop in mask-wearing, even on TfL services.

The unions fear it would be difficult to reintroduce mask-wearing if the government decided to do so.

Mike Lynch, general secretary of the RMT union, said his members had noticed a marked policy drift since the government changed the rules.

“Even on London Transport, where it is supposed to be a condition of carriage, just like paying a fare, the policy is coming apart at the seams and as more people see others failing to comply, the situation will escalate quickly over the autumn,” he said. There is a serious issue over enforcement, with our members potentially put into the front line ‎and risking abuse and violence from those actually seeking confrontation. “With the government already making compulsory mask-wearing on transport a contingency if cases escalate in the coming weeks, there is a real danger they won’t be able to get the genie back into the bottle.”

Perhaps there will be no consequences … perhaps …

I do wish there was something firmer in these matters. Given the huge numbers of cases still, you would think some proper enforcement would be in order. If you don’t pay your fare, you get chucked off. If you don’t wear a mask, you don’t get on…simple! And if you take it off mid journey, you get chucked off too if you insist on not wearing it. Carriages have cameras.
