Coronavirus Scotland: 7,113 new Covid cases in 24 hours and no new deaths

The figures are a new record high for Scotland, however, many were processed more than 48 hours ago as a result of the high volumes of tests currently being received.

Sadly, still on the rise … :slightly_frowning_face:

I’ll be interested in figures for later in the week, possibly into next week. There was a heck of a lot of activity with the football on over the weekend

Covid-19 has been named on the death certificate of 156,119 people.

The most recent figures show that there are 7,606 Covid-19 patients in hospital, with 1,034 on ventilators.

Many cases during the pandemic have not shown up in the official daily count because testing only became available in summer 2020, with only people in hospital being tested before then.

Even as testing became widespread, cases will have been missed as some people did not develop symptoms or had such a mild illness they did not realise they were infected.

Modelling by the University of Cambridge suggests 17,000,000 people in England have been infected since the pandemic began - about 30% of the population.

At the current rate of recorded infection, There’ll be another 1,200,000 cases in September … :scream_cat:

Ministers could consider a two-week “firebreak lockdown” as soon as October if the spike in Covid > hospitalisations continues to grow.

According to a report in The i, the Government has drawn up plans for restrictions during the school half-term, amid fears the NHS will come under increasing pressure as winter nears.

A member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) told the newspaper the UK is about to enter “an extended peak” of infections and hospitalisations, and that concern is growing that the health service faces being overwhelmed.

A full lockdown, which would see the October half-term break extended into November, would be a last resort and advisers may instead suggest other restrictions as an alternative.

“This is essentially the precautionary break that Sage suggested last year,” the Sage source told the paper.

“It would be sensible to have contingency plans, and if a lockdown is required, to time it so that it has minimal economic and societal impact.”

Currently, hospital admissions are approaching 1,000 a day:scream:
