Coronavirus: Isolation for over-70s ‘within weeks’
Action to isolate the UK’s over-70s for an extended period to shield them from coronavirus is planned in the coming weeks, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has confirmed.
The self-isolation measure would mean people being asked to remain at home without visitors and with groceries and vital medication dropped off for them on their doorsteps.
Speaking to Sky News’s Sophy Ridge, Mr Hancock was asked whether the advice would be in place for four months as had been reported.
He said: “We’ll be setting it out with more detail when it is the right time to do so.”
But he added the reason the measure had not been implemented yet was that the length of time required was “very long”.
Woolworths supermarket has moved to cancel delivery services “until further notice” after experiencing high levels of demand for groceries over the weekend in Victoria, a spokesperson has said.
It will continue to service online deliveries in the state — but only in select metropolitan areas, it added.
"We understand the decision to suspend delivery services out of Victorian stores will be incredibly frustrating for our customers and apologise for the inconvenience caused," the spokesperson said.
"We're currently processing refunds on existing orders for customers.
"We believe this is a necessary step to allow our team members to prioritise restocking shelves and serving customers in our Victorian stores."
The supermarket is looking to resume online services out of its stores “as soon as possible”.
What they should do and it’s a simple precaution is to tell people to stay at least a metre apart in public places.
NSW Health says you can still go to work or school and use public transport to get around.
But you should aim to stay 1.5 metres away from other people while social distancing — no mean feat if you’re on a packed bus or train.
That’s why health authorities have admitted it cannot be practised in all situations, despite how effective that would be to stem the flow of cases.
There is no need to live off canned goods for the duration of social distancing — trips to the grocery store are fine, as long as you keep your distance from fellow shoppers and make it a quick trip.
The World Health Organisation says you do not need to wear a mask if you are not displaying any symptoms.
I agree Ben and I appreciate that which is being suggested is for my own good my being one of the ‘vulnerable people’ and it is preferable to the alternative :-(.
I was a bit shocked at the proposals to begin with and bitterly disappointed to be missing a holiday by the sea with my grandchildren in June but we can’t always have what we want in life.
We have time to prepare and this morning I am going to clean out a cupboard in the porch and put a box in there
in which parcels can be left including my medication.
I am one of the lucky ones in having family not far away who can collect my prescription, for those who don’t I understand provision is being made to deliver essentials.
Whenever I start to feel sorry for myself I will think about the medical staff who are going to have to deal with this , I don’t envy their job
It cannot be applied in all situations but if they apply it in places such as supermarkets hospital waiting rooms airports etc then the elderly and their carers will feel less vulnerable. Shop staff should be given masks to protect customers.
Isn’t it about time these scaremongers ,oops mean TV and newspaper reporters, were forced by having a news blackout, to stop spreading so many lies about this virus. I suspect 95 out of 100 are just a common cold.
I bet if they reported on a fart it would be reported as a huge chemical factory explosion.
Why don’t they just SHUT UP for a change
Now they are tgalkikng about the over 70’s having to self isolate. Well all I can say to that is

No government ponce is going to stop me going out if I want to.
And how are the tens of thousands that live alone and have no families supposed to survive that?
A split condom is more worrying
Indeed … :!:
The UK has an ageing population
• There are nearly 12 million people aged 65 and above in the UK of which:
o 5.4 million people are aged 75+,
o 1.6 million are aged 85+,
o Over 500,000people are 90+
o 14,430 are centenarians
Many live alone and many are disabled …
This might suit Annie!

As long as I can get my dog out at least once a day for an hour and get enough supplies in for us both I can cope with cancelling social stuff and not seeing anyone if I have to.
I woke at 6.30am this morning, chucked some clothes on and headed out for a walk. Even though we had to do a long pavement walk (fields are too muddy for scooter it just slides and gets stuck)…and we went down 2 main roads and past the Asda I didn’t see another soul! Asda car park was deserted, apart from a few cars where staff park at the far end
It felt more like I was out at 5am sunday or something! Usually I will see at least around 5 people during an hour and half walk at that time when its dry and not too cold, either passing or in the distance with their dogs.
I’ll continue to go out early though usually I’d wait until everyone has gone to work or school midweek but if everybody is going to be working from home and kids off school, they’re just going to be running about all day outside especially if we get nice weather. so are going to be mixing and passing it round the village by the time they’ve finished anyway!
Glad the clocks are going back soon so it will be light by 5am, will be starting early morning walks for the rest of the summer I think!
Another family member though (over 70) is going to her caravan and going out for a meal for her birthday, I said I think things will be closed if the govt does a lockdown?? Although supermarkets and restaurants/cafe’s may stay open to feed people (and chemists maybe too like Italy) surely holiday camps like the one her static caravan is at will have to close?
Hi
telling people to stay one metre apart is simply not going to work.
They were jammed in the supermarkets, I only went to collect a prescription.
Buses, trams, metro systems, the Tube.
It is simply not practicable.
The local yobs most certainly will not be complying with it.
Over 70s Stay at Home.
Well Now…Seen this? I forsee fun n games ahead.
I think this is really silly.
I was just watching the Andrew Marr Show, and he says that if you are over 70 you have to isolate yourself for 4 months, if caught out, you will be arrested and escorted back home.
So what happens if an elderly person lives in a flat with no garden with a dog, who needs to go out for walks and also shopping as he has no one else to help him?
I think this virus is done deliberately with a Chemical Weapon from another Country.
Forward
Hi
There will be deaths either way.
There is an optimum time to tell the vulnerable to stay at home. systems must be in place to support them, which means food deliveries and care packages.
This is far more critical in the larger urban ares where there is far less community spirit than there is in villages and rural areas.
Hi
Susie, it is not a chemical weapon, it is a virus.
It has not been weaponised, it has a very low mortality rate which primarily affects the elderly and vulnerable.
Biological Attacks are not targeted at the elderly and infirm.
They are targeted at the fit and able in order to bring a country to it’s knees quickly.
