Coronavirus

From what I read Australia and New Zealand, both islands, managed to lock everything down, unlike the UK. We are a small island so it should have been even easier but it didn’t happen. At the start of the pandemic I read somewhere that some 20,000 people arrived in the UK after travelling by air from countries where coronavirus was really bad!

As a result of failures like that we have what we have now, appalling total figures for fatalities and those contracting the coronavirus. Not forgetting of course all the problems the two lockdowns we have gone through have caused in the population, a lot of this has yet to be fully realised. :frowning:

We are still shut down only returning residents enter the country and only people with permits leave.

All covid outbreaks have come from Hotel Quarantine because the useless Federal Government has had a year to build Howards Springs like quarantine centres but has done absolutely nothing. they have totally botched the vaccine roll out too. Thank goodness for the State Geovernments.

At this moment Greater Sydney is in Lockdown because of the Delta strain, it has just been extended to 30th July but I suspect it will be extended past that date unless things improve dramatically.

I was a bit worried with yesterday’s figures showing no new cases in Australia (there were 69 in NSW alone) but it looks like they have been included in today’s figures.

I forgot to mention that Victoria locked down Melbourne from midnight tonight so now Australia’s two largest cities are in lockdown. That is about half of the country’s total population.

It rather spoiled the news that unemployment had fallen to the lowest level for over 10 years (that was before the latest lockdown)

New restrictions in NSW

From 11:59pm today, people who live in the local government areas (LGAs) of Fairfield, Canterbury-Bankstown and Liverpool will not be allowed to leave those regions for work.

The only people exempt from the new stay-at-home orders in those areas are emergency services and health workers.

People in the aged-care and disability sectors are included as health workers.

There are several other major changes being made to the lockdown affecting Greater Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Wollongong and Shellharbour.

Many non-essential retail businesses will be forced to close, although they will still be able to operate “click and collect”, takeaway and delivery services.

Some essential businesses, like supermarkets, and grog shops, will remain open.

Further, from 12:01am Monday, July 19:

All construction will be paused

Non-urgent maintenance, including cleaning services and repair work on residential premises will be paused

There has also been another COVID-19 death, bringing the state’s number of fatalities since the start of the pandemic to 59.

Adelaide (SA) is locking down from 6pm tonight.

The first regional centre in NSW is now in lockdown. Orange and two neighbouring LGAs were locked down after a worker tested positive at a Nestles processing plant.

14 million Australians are now in lockdown - that is over half of the population.

According to modelling Sydney could be locked down until early September

What’s happened to Sweden? No new cases or deaths in the last three days…:102:

Perhaps they just don’t publish their data on a daily basis. They have nearly a 1000 cases today but overall they are doing pretty well.

I was surprised because I thought they just let the virus rip with no precautions taken but 1million cases with only 14000 deaths is very good compared to the rest of Europe. They must have a very good health service (and no Boris perhaps?). Their vaccination regime is ramping up exponentially too

The NSW outbreak shows no sign of being under control with 124 cases today. About 100 people are in hospital, I think 14 are on ventilators. This delta strain seems to be affecting young people more than the original strain because half those in hospital are under 50.

On the bright side(?) no-one in hospital has had two doses of the vaccine.

Thank you Scotty for running the slowest vaccine roll out in the OECD. You useless pr**k

Just watching the 11am Premier’s news conference.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the situation in NSW, particularly in the south-west and western suburbs, was now regarded as a “national emergency” and called on the federal government to refocus the national vaccination strategy.

The NSW government is also expanding its ban on people leaving local government areas for work to Cumberland and Blacktown.

Previously, it had applied to people in Fairfield, Canterbury-Bankstown and Liverpool.

NSW has recorded 136 new COVID-19 cases and another death linked to the growing outbreak.

Two more deaths reported today in NSW. One was a lady in her 70s but the second was a lady in her 30s with no co-morbities.

Neither was vaccinated (Thank you Scotty) but the second death is more worrying to authorities because it shows this Delta variant affects younger people more seriously than the original strain.

Over 40 people are currently in hospital - only one had received any vaccine and then only one dose
