I think she was saying that she doesnât recognise them as biological women but acknowledges that once they have gone through the legal procedure of getting a Gender Recognition Certificate then they are legally women in the eyes of the law
Iâm a woman, Iâm a biological woman. If I had a mastectomy, in future years, I would still be a woman. Iâm a woman in every cell of my body. Iâm also legally a woman. And people who have been through the gender recognition process, the gender reassignment, some people will have a birth certificate reissued to them in their new gender and in law, they will be in their new gender. And when youâre writing law about those people, you have to take that into account. That doesnât mean theyâre identical to me.
She doesnât see âthose peopleâ as a women like her, apparently.
Thanks for the extra info re Fox @Maree - Iâm glad heâs not in the
Tory Leadership Contest!
Voting will have closed now for the 1st round - we may get the results just in time for pre-dinner Cocktails - Iâll have to look for a suitably named concoction to make!
I wonder whoâll be celebrating and whoâll be commiserating.
Iâd say it would either be Penny Mordaunt of Liz Truss who becomes PM as theyâre the favourites amongst the membership. And going by PMQâs today if I was an MP Iâd choose Mordaunt as canât think of anything that Labour can throw at her.
I donât set much store by Sunak getting the most votes at this stage - thereâs many a slip twixt cup and lip - most of the other candidates are quite different from Sunak - he seems the most âcentristâ and the only one not going down the tax cuts route, so as those with fewer votes are voted out, their supporters are more likely to switch to a candidate making similar promises.
Personally, Sunak sounds the best plan to me but I think the Tory membership are more likely to go for one of the others and Mordaunt sounds the best of the other bunch to me - really hope it wonât be Truss.
Well worth watching Penny Mordaunt put Ian Blackford in his place, theyâll be quaking if she gets in. Think all the Scots should be made to watch this to see how theyâre being conned:
Tory leadership race: Liz Truss bids to make final two
Liz Truss has pledged to boost the economy through tax cuts, as she bids to regain the initiative in the race to be the next Conservative leader. The foreign secretary said she was âready to be prime minister from day oneâ, as she launched her campaign. She is currently third behind Penny Mordaunt and Rishi Sunak after the first round of voting by Tory MPs.
The MPs are whittling down the field to two contenders, who will then face a vote of Tory Party members. The second round of MPsâ voting has begun. The secret ballot, which will see the candidate with the fewest votes eliminated, takes place between 11:30-13:30 BST, with a result expected at 15:00 BST.
In a speech launching her campaign, Ms Truss pledged to move away from âbusiness-as-usual economic management,â adding this had delivered âlow growth for decadesâ. She promised to reverse Aprilâs National Insurance hike, reverse next yearâs scheduled rise in corporation tax and set up âlow tax zonesâ to help attract business. She re-committed to Mr Johnsonâs levelling up project to reduce regional inequalities âin a Conservative wayâ.
And in a bid to emphasise her experience in government, she said she had âconsistently deliveredâ and shown she wouldnât âgive in to Whitehallâ. Ms Truss sought to stress her leadership credentials on Brexit and defence, but warned that the economy would ânot get back on track overnightâ. She promised to get the country on an upwards trajectory by 2024 and added she would seek to treat debt taken on in response to the Covid pandemic as a one-off event, paying it off over a longer period of time.
Asked about whether her backing for Mr Johnson could count against her, Ms Truss said that she was a âloyalistâ and had supported his aspirations.
