I’m just a Boomer, one of the youngest, so I share a of GenX experience and I think we had it pretty good compared to young people now
1980 was the pivotal year.
@Maree , AnnieS, lf you ladies are thinking youv’e seen the best, it’s
probably because you are of an age to be a member of this forum ??
Younger people have zero experience of what went before ? They only know
NOW !! and what they desire? Which usually does not include physical work
any longer ! What is happening right now can be blamed on the altered
perceptions of the present generation for which WE are partly responsible
as we encouraged it ?
Donkeyman!
They do have some idea they know they can’t work freely or travel in Europe as they used to do for a start . They see houses soar far beyond their reach . They have to pay horrendous rents they have to compete for jobs . They struggles with student debt and have to deal with congested roads.
INot all young people are lazy it’s not easy for them and will get worse.
Then there is the Inheritance Tax to worry about, that’s one worry we never had.
No death duties in Australia.
We still don’t have to worry about it, that only becomes due when we are no longer around!
Oh I see what you mean!
Perhaps that’s the answer, we should all go and live in Australia!
I would be there tomorrow, if I was 20 or 30 years younger!
IHT ( inheritance tax ) is disgraceful the allowance hasn’t been amended for over a decade and house prices have soared pushing many into the IHT bracket . That useless Nick Clegg ( and I voted for the %£+@ ) stopped Cameron putting it up to £500 a person instead we have this complicated and grossly unfair ‘family home ‘ palaver .
IHT in the U.K. goes straight in at 40% and if Corbyn had got in he would have taken the allowance away altogether ( 325m) .
There has been a measure applied to lessen the amount of IHT payable on increasing property prices. This allows the maximum IHT allowance to increase from £325,000 by making an additional allowance, this changes each year. The current amount is £175,000, so increasing the maximum amount on which IHT is payable from £325,000 to over £500,000. This was brought in because of the increase in property prices. I agree it’s disgraceful anyway, tax has already been paid during the working life of property owners and tax at 40% makes this even worse.
@Muddy , Do you not think their problems are caused by their taking out
student loans and going on holidays to Florida and theeeded far East every year
then Muddy??
Why can’t they travel around Europe? All they need to do is fill in the paperwork
Before the EU was invented l travelled extensively around Europe and could
buy a visa at the borders where neccassary , on my motor bike !?
Later on l bought a house by saving my wages by not having holidays
at all for over two years !!
My parents were unable to help me, l had nothing left to me by dead relatives
with property etc ? My wages were never more than £45 per week and that
was considered good in those days for engineering !
The only thing different now imo is that are more distractions for them ?
Donkeyman!
Baz this is not how it works . It doesn’t change every year it will be stuck at £175 for the family home and this is only of it is passed on to the direct heirs or grandchildren .
So for families with no children it means they cannot give it to a niece or nephew or anyone else .
It so complicated very few people have actually done this .
So Two parents may leave their ho e to their children or grandchildren up to a million pounds .
See how unfair this is ?
They need student loans to pay university fees and living allowances .
I don’t know any young person who has used it to go to Florida . When you were young people mortgages were given on one persons wages and it was usually 3:5 times the annual salary . This kept houses reasonably low . When tow wages came into the equation house prices rose . Now houese prices are at an all time high in relation to wages , what chance has someone working in a low paid job ever got of getting on the housing ladder . Rents are exorbitant they can’t save .it’s not so easy for Brits to work in Europe any more at all they need to be come resident . Yes you can travel but you must observe the 90 day rule,. Give young people a break they face far more problems than we ever did .
I agree, not all are lazy, not even most are lazy
And as for physical work, nurses, nursing assistants, caters, cleaners, working on Amazon warehouses, cleaners etc, recycling centre workers, bin collection, all hard physical work done by young people
Plus the long hours worked on zero hours contracts
I think you get just as many lazy older people and there were always those white collars who thought they were too good for physical work
@Maree , Your catalogue of workers consists mainly of immigrants Maree ??
otherwise l completely agree with you !!
Donkeyman!
Our National Entitlement Card in Scotland does not stop us using our cords before 09;30. In fact I cannot see any restrictions whatsoever.
@Muddy , l don’t know what happened Muddy, l did type and send a reply
to your last post, so l am rethinking it now to send again ?
I think you misunderstood me about the students using their loans to pay for
holidays in Florida etc, what l meant was that they take out student loans as
well as take holidays abroad ! When instead of going to uni they would be
better off studying to be a HGV driver or something similar that is useful
to the country too ! IMO the numbers of blue collar workers in UK is too low
compared to the white collared workers? This is why we have to import our
blue collared workers now, which also puts downward pressure on our own
blue collared workers too, which causes them to do other things, and further
exacerbates the white collar/blue collar balance ??And so it goes on !!
We have too many professors and not enough doer’s anymore ?
All the troubles we are seeing right now are the result of this imbalance IMO ??
Donkeyman!
Hi
Inheritance Tax/
The very wealthy do not pay it, they have family trusts set up by experts.
I am not in that bracket by a long way and object to paying Solicitors for anything.
I took early retirement, took the maximum tax free lump sum out of my Pensions and gave it away.
The big house in the village was mortgaged and the money was given away.
No IHT to pay, I downsized hugely to an ex council end of terrace, mortgage free and worth below the £175,000 IHT allowance.
There is an annual limit on gifts to family, but it does not apply to gifts from Income.
You have to accept that if you want to avoid the tax you have to take action.
