Boris Johnson appoints new ministerial standards adviser amid Downing St flat row
Boris Johnson has appointed the former private secretary to the Queen, Lord Geidt, as the new independent adviser on ministers’ interests.
The post has been vacant since Sir Alex Allan resigned in November after the PM overruled him over a report into alleged bullying by Priti Patel.
Interesting … :!:
Lord Geidt is expected to sign off on the publication of the latest register of ministerial interests, which could contain details of any donations to fund the Downing Street flat.
The publication of the register has been delayed until a new standards adviser was in place.
A former army intelligence officer and diplomat, Lord Geidt was the Queen’s private secretary for 10 years. In September 2017, The Times reported that he had been “ousted in a Palace power struggle” between Buckingham Palace and the Prince of Wales.
He joined the House of Lords as a crossbench peer, with no party affiliation, in 2017. He is also chairman of King’s College London and chairman (international relations and corporate responsibility) at hedge fund Schroders.
NB:
The terms of reference for Lord Geidt’s job, which includes advising the PM on the code governing ministers’ behaviour, have been tightened-up slightly.
He will now be able to “confidentially” raise concerns with the prime minister, if he thinks allegations the code has been broken need to be investigated.
But he will not be able to launch investigations himself, as the PM believes that could lead to probes into “trivial or vexatious complaints”, his spokesman said.
The spokesman added that the PM will retain the power to decide whether ministers have broken the code, and any appropriate sanctions.
BJ - the arbiter of his own conduct …
But you worry that fish feel pain. ???
Oh yeah !!
Donkeyman!
What has that got to do with the price of soap?
Nothing !!
Just seems to be a contradiction somewhere
Donkeyman!
Boris Johnson will decide himself if he broke rules over flat refurbishment
Downing Street announced this morning Lord Geidt, the newly appointed “independent advisor” on ministerial standards, would lead an investigation into the funding of the reportedly lavish makeover.
But the Prime Minister’s spokesman confirmed Mr Johnson will remain the “ultimate arbiter” of whether he broke the ministerial code.
And he won’t recuse himself, even though he is the target of the investigation.
So, what judge is going to find himself “guilty” … least of “notorious” Johnson … :?:
Who cares…honestly who cares…its a council flat it comes with the job.
Hi
To be honest, as long as it was not the tax pater, we already pay £30k a year for the upkeep of the council flat, I really am not bothered.
What bothers me is that it appears Boris has lied about it and has thought he could just lie and treat us as gullible idiots.
He could just have declared it and that would have been that.
Its the top job in the land we should foot the bill …whatever improvements are made he leaves behind and there has to be some incentives to doing the job…I wouldnt do it thats for sure and looking at how the Camerons left it I wouldnt have wanted to live there either.
Summer, You are exactly right! Boris doesn’t even own the flat! He wont ever gain anything personally in monetary value by its decoration.
He will never even get the chance to take advantage of the ‘Right To Buy’ option!! Could you imagine if he did? The doomers would have a relapse!
This is the style (Lulu Lytle) in which No 11 is (probably) now decorated:
I certainly would want to live with that appalling taste …
Yuck!
PMQs yesterday:
An unusually witty line from Starmer:
“I see the prime minister has been promoted, Mr Speaker. He’s not just Major Sleaze, he’s now General Shambles.”
I shall use it myself when those Tories trying to cover up for their incompetence dealing with the COVID-19 crisis refer to “Captain Hindsight” …
You mean Starmer, the in his dreams, ‘wannabe prime minister’ that got kicked out of a pub the other week!
It’s a wonder, he didn’t shout out, ‘Don’t you know who l am?’
Boris Johnson reported to MPs’ standards watchdog over flat costs
Labour’s Margaret Hodge has reported Boris Johnson to the MPs’ standards watchdog over how renovations to his flat were initially paid for.
Ms Hodge said it was “unacceptable” that the PM “refuses to publicly declare exactly where the upfront costs for this redecoration came from”.
The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, Kathryn Stone, has the power to force an MP to apologise, or even suspend them from the House of Commons.
In her letter to the Commissioner, Dame Margaret, the former chairwoman of the public accounts select committee, said “it would appear” that the prime minister had “repeatedly broken the general principles of the Code of Conduct”.
She said Mr Johnson was still not being open and accountable with the media or Parliament.
Ms Stone has said she cannot confirm any MPs are under investigation while the UK is in an election period.
In a statement to the media, posted on her website, the Commissioner said she had recently been given the power to publish the names of MPs who her office is looking into.
But, she said she would release information of active investigations after 6 May’s local elections.
BJ, of course, has been suspended previously:
Very funny … and very accurate … yes, it’s the same sordid business …
Sixteen pages of absolute drivel.
