Future benefits is just another way of saying there aren’t any but we hope to goodness something happens to make it all better at some imaginary point in time .
it is over. We have left. The rest is nothing to do with Brexit. The post-Brexit reality is difficult for some to deal with. These are our problems now.
EU membership was an unacknowledged boon: it had opened up 40 years of economic growth that allowed Britain to become a much more liberal society while avoiding the tough issues in addressing the deep dysfunctions of its capitalism. The better part of the City boomed, offered a continental hinterland, while multinational investors turned round swathes of the British economy – from the car to the food industry – able to export freely from low-cost Britain into the EU single market. Companies such as Vodafone could become multinationals, turning British standards into global standards via the EU’s blessing. Our regions were propped up by generous EU funding. Longstanding weaknesses, from endemic financial short-termism to a chronically weak training system, were disguised. Where weakly regulated Britain did not act, from securing clean beaches to promoting security at work, the EU stepped in to hide British failings.
Yes, but they are our problems now because of what the Brexiters did.
So it is right to remember who is to blame and not trust them in the future or go along with anything they want
And the best solution to those problems is to fight and work towards getting us back in,.
While maintaining close co-operation and trade with the EU high and aligning to their high standards on food, animal welfare and green issues to make re-entry easier
And protecting our people from Tory attacks on human rights and workers rights now we’re no longer protected from them by EU law
So believe me, we may have left but the war ain’t over till the fat lady sings……
Boomers had more opportunities because of the Marshall plan. The Marshall plan paved the way for the EU. The point of the Marshall plan was to encourage democracy which provides a stable environment for economic growth. So even before the EEC we benefited. My main reason for remain was to maintain peace in Europe. I didn’t agree with the mad rush to further integration. But peace and stability is more important than details you can fight out if you have a strong stake. We just had weak leaders though who didn’t want to make the effort to influence EU development.
Our best solution is to maintain a good relationship of collaboration with the EU & have some sensible negotiations on the way towards resolution of problems. We do not want to go back in on unfavourable terms. So that isn’t going to happen. Brussels needs to understand & stop crossing red lines for sovereign member states. Hopefully they will learn from past mistakes.
The quote, form the Guardian, makes it sound as if there’s now a thriving British car Industry, thanks to the EU, but all the cars on the roads where I live, seem to be German, far East, etc., I never see a British one.
Also, it seems that all is thriving in the food industry, but it doesn’t mention that the grants went to the Farm Owners, who are not the farmers. Farmers are the ones who rent the fields, buy the stuff, grow it whilst the owners take the grants.
@AnnieS ldealistic twaddle Annie !
EU had 50yrs to treat UK fairly ?
They didn’t do it ! regardless of our weak leaders, fairness is fairness is
fairness? otherwise is just opportunism !!
We don’t get to choose the terms upon which we can return, our position is significantly weaker, we don’t have a lot of bargaining power. Brussels really don’t need to understand anything at all it is the UK that would have to be humble in order to return. Incidentally what do you understand by “sovereignty” , it’s a word that’s banded around as if it’s self evident but it really isn’t.
That’s our fault DM for having poor leadership. We benefited from the relationship but didn’t want to be active in leading in the EU. Thatcher is the only one who took the bull by the horns. Since then our leaders were light touch.
On the contrary Brussels need to take a hard look at themselves. There’s no benefit in us going back now in any “humble” state. EU countries are all sovereign states. We have discussed the meaning quite enough here in the past.
