Breaking - Joe Biden wins US presidential election

Anyone can talk the talk…

Let’s see if he can walk the walk.

Well … let’s let his foot heal first …

Finally some good news. Haleluya.

I’m sure much will be written on this but I think USA came close to losing democracy permanently. Trump was the wake up call the world needed to see.
We have to stop massive personal wealth driving politics.

There is nothing remotely democratic about a system where only those with the deepest pockets are elligible to lead a country, instead of those most capable.
That is why the USA is in such a mess regarding these Presidentials.

It’s akin to a toss-up for the UK PM being between (say) Richard Branson, James Dyson and Jim Ratcliffe.
Now how many are, like me, saying “Praise be that none of that bunch is interested in politics enough to try it” ?
Mind you, we could maybe cope with a Virgin Prime Minister!

At least the result is finally accepted even Putin has congratulated Biden.

Why “even Putin”?

Blimey, so he has:

Russian President Vladimir Putin has become one of the last world leaders to congratulate US President-elect Joe Biden on his victory.

Mr Biden and Mr Putin had frosty relations when the former served as vice-president under Barack Obama.

The Kremlin had said it would wait for official results from November’s vote before recognising the victory.

Most world leaders congratulated Mr Biden within days of the 3 November poll, when it was clear he had defeated Mr Trump.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has also finally congratulated Mr Biden but Brazil’s President, Jair Bolsonaro, has still not done so, nor has North Korea’s Kim Jong-un.

Not that it matters - it’s too late to be even a courtesy towards Joe … :102:

It wasn’t until he actually started his presidency, people began to realise just what an egregious mistake, (bigly badly, in Trump speak), President Trump was.

He really should have followed the adage it’s far better to keep your mouth shut and let everybody think you’re a moron, than open it and prove them right.

Because he was the last to do so was he not?

Twitter to wipe Trump’s followers before Biden handover

The move marks a reversal from the last transition.

“In 2016, the Trump administration absorbed all of President Obama’s Twitter followers on @POTUS and @WhiteHouse - at Team 44’s urging,” Rob Flaherty, the president-elect’s digital director, tweeted on Monday. “In 2020, Twitter has informed us that as of right now the Biden administration will have to start from zero.”

It affects followers of government-led accounts such as @POTUS and @FLOTUS, all of which will be transferred to Mr Biden when he takes over the presidency in January.

Twitter said those who follow the current presidential accounts will be notified that they are being archived, and will be given the choice to follow the Biden administration’s new accounts.

Mr Biden’s personal account, @JoeBiden, has 21.7 million followers, and will be unaffected by the move.

President Trump has famously used his Twitter accounts, both professional and personal, to engage with voters.

During his time in the White House, he has tweeted more than 50,000 times.

However, according to Factbase, a website that tracks tweets and follower counts, Mr Trump has lost 369,849 followers on his personal account since November.

In the same timeframe, President-elect Joe Biden has gained 2,671,790 followers.

The decision from Twitter comes just days after chief executive Jack Dorsey unfollowed numerous political figures on the platform, including Mr Trump, Mr Biden and Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris.

Marketing specialist Rebecca Lodge, from Start Up Disruptors, said of Twitter’s decision: “With millions of people following an account and Donald’s ‘fans’ being quite fanatical, it could be a clever move by Twitter to ensure that any potential negative and hate-fuelled tweets are neutralised before the new president-elect takes up his position.”

Good for Twitter … :023:

Congress certifies Joe Biden’s victory

The US Congress has certified Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election. The certification clears the way for Mr Biden to be sworn in on 20 January.

It came on the day two Democrats won Senate seats in elections in Georgia, giving the party effective control of the whole of Congress. This major political victory will ease the passage of Mr Biden’s agenda after he is inaugurated.

Democrat Joe Biden’s victory was confirmed at about 03:30 local time (08:30 GMT) on Thursday in a joint session presided over by Republican Vice-President Mike Pence.

Objections by some Republican lawmakers to overturn the result in Arizona and Pennsylvania were rejected. Congress formally certified the final electoral college vote, with Mr Biden receiving 306 votes to Mr Trump’s 232.

For days Mr Trump had been piling pressure on his vice-president to block certification. But in a letter to Congress on Wednesday, Mr Pence said he had no “unilateral authority to decide which electoral votes should be counted”.

Good for Congress … :023:

Why does anyone even want a job where thousands of people hate you and are after your blood from day 1? :102:

Trump ‘furious’ so many celebrities performing for Biden inauguration

Donald Trump is furious that so many top celebrities, including Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez and Tom Hanks, are going to feature at president-elect Joe Biden’s inaugural celebrations on Wednesday, in stark contrast to his own event four years ago.

The president was once a firm fixture at celebrity parties in New York, and hosted several star-studded events throughout his time as host of The Apprentice. In 2005, during his wedding with Melania, he had Elton John and Billy Joel sing. But after the rhetoric of his 2016 campaign and the establishment of his hard-line policies, which continued throughout his presidency, many Hollywood stars maintained their distance, including from his inauguration in January 2017.

Mr Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday, a limited affair due to Covid-19, will involve a 90-minute prime-time programme to be hosted by Tom Hanks. It will include remarks from Mr Biden, vice president-elect Kamala Harris and performances from stars including Ant Clemons, Jon Bon Jovi, the Foo Fighters, John Legend, Eva Longoria, Demi Lovato, Bruce Springsteen, Justin Timberlake, and Kerry Washington.

Several other Hollywood stars are also expected to be part of the programme. The programme will be live on most television networks and across social media channels.

Bad for Trump, Good for Joe … :026:

They’ve done nothing for a year. No wonder they are desperate. I bet mote people turn up to see trump in florida than come to see the reincarnation of Creepy Joe

Good question Mups!

Too much zeal against the opposing political side is why we have so many narcissists run for high office. It’s not thick skin you have to have to take the constant barrage of criticism, you have to think of your opposition as foes who are wrong about you.

The occasional Frankensteins are of our own making.

Out of the millions of Americans there are, I find it difficult to understand how America came up with those two.

Well, at the last election, America “came up trumps” and looked what happened … :081:

Bet Meghan was miffed, too busy with her law suit to attend

Joe Biden becomes the 46th US president

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-us-canada-55730500

Joe Biden has been sworn in as the 46th US president at the US Capitol in Washington.

Vice-president Kamala Harris has taken her oath too - becoming the first woman to hold that position.

In his first speech, Biden says “this is democracy’s day” and says the US “has much to do in this winter of peril, much to repair”

The new president says the country must confront the rise of white supremacy, and reject manufactured facts.

He goes on: “I will be a president for all Americans. I will fight as hard for those who did not support me as for those who did”.

Good for Joe … :026:

He keeps dividing America. He’s been doing it for 47 years and Harris will divide the party by welcoming in the hard left.

And Biden is President number 45.5 if you go by mental capacity.
