well a neckless head held high could be difficult but I would be more worried about a hanging gut that keeps hangin lower and lower until the trouser belt cannot be seen
Beheading as a method of execution in Britain dated back to the Normans . In a society ever conscious of class differences it had become the way chosen for those of ‘high birth’, while the common herd faced hanging, often a slow and agonising death. For those at the very top, like Anne Boleyn , the beheading was effected with a sword; the rest had to make do with an axe.
I remember when Maggie left her office in tears, but I can understand her feelings bearing in mind that she was knifed in the back in thanks for her success.
Boris, on the other hand, has nothing to hold his head high for. Rather, he should be hanging his head in shame for his lies and his letting us all down by repeatedly giving in to our erstwhile rulers in Europe.
To be clear I’ve never liked Boris on a personal level as I had always thought of him as a dishevelled, disorganised bumbling oaf and I didn’t vote for him at the last conservative leadership election, but all of those qualities apart thank goodness we had him in charge for the last three years rather than Corbyn or indeed, any other politician that I could name.
Let’s just consider the last three years and the political baptism of fire that he had to face.
The first thing of course was Brexit. Boris got us out of the EU, OK it is in a fashion and not completely how I would have liked it but at least we have escaped their grasp, we are out and we are staying out.
Second thing for him to deal with was Covid. Even though Boris himself nearly succomed to the dreaded C19, we still had the fastest rollout of a vaccine program of any country in the world, and we were one of the quickest out of lockdown. The working population and small business were supported to the cost of hundreds of billions over a couple of years which saved hundreds of thousands of jobs and livelihoods. I agree many billions were wasted on PPE etc. with many more lost to fraud and not a few shady deals, but the Covid program was a success overall and how easy life is in retrospect when the urgency of the moment is conveniently forgotten.
The war in Ukraine and Putin’s aggression has put the global economy in freefall and has exasipated an already bad situation in a world struggling to recover from Covid. Boris has rightly led the way in backing Ukraine against Russia, because if Putin manages to take Ukraine you can bet he won’t stop there and many other small countries that used to be in the USSR would be next in his sights, and with such a weak US President at the moment thank goodness Boris stepped up to the mark and took the lead.
Finally we have the cost of living crisis, which again is a global problem and not one exclusive to the UK, where Boris and the government have again stepped up to the plate by allowing the spending billions to try and offset the worst effects for the most vulnerable. Of course we all want more, but there are very few countries in the world that I know of that are trying to do more and every taxpayers pound spent just adds to the mountain of debt to be repaid by our children.
One hell of a wild ride then for him over the last three years. On the upside we now have a booming economy, almost full employment and thousands of vacancies, we currently have one of the highest export figures ever and one of the highest growth rates of the G7 last month so yes, I believe that he can leave office with his head held high and rightly proud of what he’s achieved in office, and I doubt anyone could name another politician who could have coped with the last three years any better.
So thank goodness he was here for us in our hour of need. It’s a travesty really that after all the great things that he has done he was brought down by trivialities blown out of all proportion by the Boris hating left wing, the inconsolable remainers and the right wing bashing MS media.
Personally I worry for the future even more now, that old saying just keeps coming to mind “be careful what you wish for”… I just hope we don’t live to regret it.
@Barry excellent post Barry exactly how i see it , lot of people with short memories , and now the tough part is done they jump in to take over .
I think Boris deserves a Knighthood with how he battled all the Crap, .
