Actually not so strange at all, in fact a well known phenomenon.
You point out one of the important anomalies in the global warming record. During the time you mention global warming plateaued precisely because of the pollution you mention. The smoke, smog and carbon particles in the air halted the increase in global temperatures.
It was the clean air acts that most countries were forced to introduce in the 1950/60s that put global warming back onto its inexorable rise.

If it is, lets compare the amount of land it takes up compared to it’s power output.
Now compare that with thousands of hectares of land needed for solar panels and wind turbines and the output they produce.
Strikes me there will be no room for the humans soon or anywhere to grow their food.
That’s rather the point - sheep are food.

Just going back to the sheep, I think we should start collecting the wool and start producing our own clothes again. All the Grunts that enter the country should be set to work in workhouses like in the old days. A village should be built for them like Titus Salt did in the 19th century and they would live and work in the workhouse and reside in the closed village. They would be fed and watered and given free healthcare and the free labour would ensure that the clothing they produced would be as cheap as that from east asia countries and wouldn’t need to be transported thousands of miles so good for the environment.

I’m with you, I think they look quite good and have a very small environmental impact, cattle and sheep can graze right up the the door.
The only downside that I am aware of is that birds can occasionally get hit by the blades and while that is unfortunate they don’t seem to have piles of dead birds surrounding the base.

I wonder what people thought when they first started to straddle the landscape all those years ago? Mixed feelings I’d imagine, now they’re considered by many to be an iconic piece of design. I wonder if wind turbines will be thought of in the same way in about a hundred years time, assuming they still exist…
Despite my protestations I don’t mind wind turbines at all, in fact, being an ex engineer I sort of marvel at their construction. But don’t be fooled into thinking they are not as polluting and as bad for the environment as a coal or gas fired power station, they just do it differently and probably in China where most of them are made so it’s alright then… ![]()
Solar panels on the other hand are just a massive waste of space, especially in the British Isles where land is precious and sunshine/daylight is poor compared to Australia who have millions of square miles of hot dusty desert that is good for little else.
Solar panels on roofs or to supplement domestic electricity are a great idea, not sure about the lithium battery backup though, but to try and supply a town or city with power from solar panels is just silly and very expensive. The lithium battery storage units take up much more room than a conventional power station and can only supply the stored power to a few thousand houses for an hour or so, and that’s in summer when nobody really needs it.
And Lithium is very dangerous.
Wind turbines on land have a limited lifespan of about 25 years. They have moving parts whereas pylons don’t.
The future lies in floating wind turbines. They are away from the coast in deep seas where wind is strong.
I agree d00d, but being so remote they are hard and costly to connect up. Some offshore wind turbines are still not connected to the grid.
Copper is also becoming a rare commodity, you only have to look at the price just lately…
