At What Age Do You Start Feeling 'Old'? And Does that Feeling Affect Who You Are?

The shift into old age isn’t marked by a single birthday—it’s a gradual, often unexpected journey influenced by everything from health to pop culture. But there usually comes a moment—a fleeting thought, a comment from a younger person, or a new ache—when you suddenly feel the weight of time. This feeling of being “old” is more than physical; it’s a profound change in identity.

For me, that would be not long after I retired.

On the day I realised that I couldn’t run anymore…I had been an ultra distance runner for 45 years. I noticed that after I turned seventy things weren’t right, and at 72 I was told in no uncertain terms that my running was over due to a serious heart condition.

Not just running, but things I took for granted all my life, like heavy work in the garden, or simple exercises were becoming out of my reach, and impossible without getting seriously out of breath. After refusing to lie down, At 74 the reality kicked in and I had to accept that my body is wearing out, and old age is finally overpowering me.

I suspect that feeling of ‘can’t do’ is making me frustrated and turning me into a grumpy old man…But only when I let my guard down…

The day my lovely long black hair started to turn platinum blonde. I was so upset about it.

Ive never felt old ,yes I did slow down when my heart was failing , since my Operation , Im the fittest Ive ever been , I get a fortnightly phone appointment from Cardio Rehab , to ask how far Ive got with the exercise plan they give me each fortnight , …

Ive started running now , and the heavy breathless I use to get is now gone, and I feel like Im floating .

Im looking forward to next year when I shall start going on day trips again, Im back in full flow going to the theatre ,

I was up and down stairs at my Sons wedding Venue last week ,I amazed all the guest in how fit and nimble I am now .

Life is a joy for me now ,

It’s given me a sense of accomplishment to know I’ve had the strength to see it through and still laugh about it all.

I’m only 65 and I started to feel old because of all the aches, pains, dodgy knees, arthritis, heart issues and now stomach issues.
I am beginning to feel a bit better as I’ve lost some weight. Carrying weight really is serious as we age. I intend to carry on losing weight, it really is helping.

You know you’re getting old when the barber asks if you want the hair in your ears and nostrils trimmed…

Up to 60, I could do whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted & how much I wanted.
Get up, wash the car, go to the shooting range with 400 rounds, come home with no ammo left, exercise, go on a date, more …exercise after the date, & still not be tired enough to sleep.
Now at 72, it’s pick one, then rest.
Definitely affects who I am. Sometimes, I say, “Damn, I hate this.”

I began to feel old at 70 , 72 now ONLY due to arthritis on right hip which I " control " by taking med as soon as I wake up and natural junk I take in afternoon but yes now need the meds and they kick in roughly 45 minutes .

I can still do enough but not like I used to .

It caught me without warning which from what I understand unheard of .

I take extra meds which not supposed to but I am reckless , have no choice Fri, Sat , Sun nights as we go out on a friends food truck and I am not missing out on that as I have a good time .

There is a man in my community in his early 90s and I see him now and then when outside before 8 am which is rare as that is when he walks passed my house .

I give him a lot of credit as he walks fast , 2 miles Mon - Fri .

He isn’t the friendliest guy going as I ask him when he walks by if he needs a ride , he insults me uses profanity and ask me if I’m that dense that I do not realize he walk for exercise .

I always reply with " Oh my goodness " and walks by pretty ticked off but it works for both of us .

When you are going through passport control in Florida with Mrs Fox and our 15 year old daughter, and the smart arse passport stamper asks if I’m on holiday with my two daughters…
If he hadn’t been wearing a pistol I would have strongly objected…
