Could be. They are influential bodies and must hate to be undercut.
In my opinion the only entity that will come out of this whole vaccine debacle smelling of roses will be AZ because of its altruism and philanthropy for supplying a vaccine at cost. All of the other pharmaceutical companies will be seen for what they’re suspected to be - money grubbing barstewards. I say this because I know that it costs an absolute fortune to develop, test, get approval for, and market a drug or vaccine. Besides which, for every drug or vaccine that actually gets approval for use, many 100s never make it outside of the laboratories and their development costs have to be covered by the ones that do.
I probably would but won’t get a jab before June or July anyway.
Maybe holds true for the UK. What we need is our own production facilities. It’s a shame that the German firm BionTech developed a vaccine and Germany is the last place on earth to get it. Today Merkel confirmed plans to build these and become independent.
I think the AZ Model of subsidising production of vaccines with the
profits of its other pharmaceutical products should become the norm
Percy in the interests of global health??
Or one day a really nasty disease will come along and 75% of the
Population won’t get access to the vaccines required !!
Maybe this is the plan to eradicate poverty ?LOL!
Donkeyman!
So you ignore the medical experts and take notice of politicians
like Merkel and Macron Dachs??? Umm?
Merkel has just displayed her expertise and rationality by reversing
her decision to lock down within 2days of making it !!
Donkeyman!
So where did Germany export the bion tech to Dachs ??
Donkeyman!
To the world, to non-EU states but hardly to Germany.
What gives you that idea? I follow the advice of my chosen medical experts. I don’t need politicians for such a purely private decision.
So the German firm BionTech developed a vaccine, but Germany exported the vaccines to non-EU countries and not Germany.
Why would Germany do that? Was it due to pressure from Brussels?
Perhaps they weren’t sure if it worked JBR !
So they tested it on foreigners first ??
Don’t make sense otherwise !!
Donkeyman!
Because the German government and Brussels, for that matter, did not order enough doses. The CEO of BionTech was puzzled about it. Another reason is that such firms, not just German ones, make their own decisions, i.e., BionTech doesn’t take orders from the German government.
So did your doctor advise you not to use the AZ Vaccine then
Dachs??
AZ has been passed by THE WHO ??
Donkeyman!
I think the EU should be blocking exports of bion tech then Dachs,
NOT astra zeneka ??
Maybe bion tech production capacity is too small?
Donkeyman!
PS. You also say that bion tech does not take orders from the German
government??
But ,the EU is trying to give orders to AZ ???
Seems to be to many cooks spoiling the vaccine both to me ?
Until the German government under EU advice restricts exports as they are with AstraZeneca and presumably them too as now you mean?
That’s where vaccine nationalism falls down.
The UK did indeed fund the Oxford/AZ vaccine but it doesn’t make the vaccine, AstraZeneca does - in factories all over the world and even under license by other manufacturers.
Until our VMIC opens and starts manufacturing itself of course.
The EU doesn’t make vaccines.
Companies with factories inside EU countries do.
And no matter who makes what, the components of nearly all these vaccines come from multiple sources all over the world.
Pfizer for example as you probably know by now relies upon some constituents produced in the UK, without which the making of their vaccine would not be possible.
That’s why there is concern about governments (and unions) interfering with production where a sale has already been agreed.
It could easily start a spiral of countries refusing to allow exports of various essentials which are necessary to manufacture vaccines, and this of course would inevitably lead to a decline in vaccine production for as long as it takes for other sources to emerge.
In turn that obviously increases costs and thus the price of vaccines, and even that does not take into account the unnecessary yet inevitable surplus deaths that having free access would otherwise prevent.
Worse even than that (if there could be anything worse) is that vaccine developers are not going to have any reason to research new vaccines.
Why spend so much on research (a huge percentage fails, remember) if you’re not then going to be allowed to make what you want and sell to who you want?
And if you do research and then discover an effective vaccine or medicine, why would you allow anybody else access under license by other manufacturers if their governments are going to keep everything for themselves?
I hope common sense prevails and that somebody quickly puts the lid back on this particular can of worms.
This is what’s being discussed. BionTech/Pfizer’s capacity in Germany and the EU is indeed too small. In April, though, a new plant in Marburg will open.
The EU is trying to create greater transparency by asking questions, e.g. about those 29 million AZ doses discovered in Italy which nobody seems to know anything about. Now it turns out that they are meant to be exported to Belgium and Third-World countries. It’s an absurdity, innit, that there is confusion about what’s going on.
Yes, they did based on the severe health issues I have. Apart from that, it’s finally up to me as to everybody else which vaccine to choose or not to get a jab at all. Lots of antivaxxers here.
The WHO approval is OK but is a recommendation after all similar to “fit for human consumption”.
From order-order
. After enduring months of baseless criticism and browbeating from the EU, AstraZeneca now reportedly regret selling their vaccine at cost price as a result of the reputational damage inflicted by European leaders, and wouldn’t replicate the strategy if another pandemic hits. What a surprise…
Speaking on the Today Programme, BBC medical editor Fergus Walsh claimed that multiple senior sources inside AstraZeneca said that in future, the company was unlikely to forego the profits enjoyed by the likes of Pfizer (set to make billions from its $19.50 jab, compared to the $4 tag for AstraZeneca’s) now that the European Commission has smeared the vaccine with claims of blood clotting and low efficacy. Not to mention threatening export controls, and blaming AstraZeneca for their shortfall in vaccine supply…
Aaah ! So you are a special case Dachs! And maybe the advice would apply to any vaccine you may need??
Let’s hope it all gets sorted soon, and the German population are
able to access vaccine as early as possible ?
Donkeyman!
Well AZ can sell their vaccine here, as far as I’m concerned and hopefully continue to do so at cost price as we haven’t been rubbishing their vaccine. Marge and I both survived unscathed so we are happy.
I can well understand them not doing so to the EU, or even refusing to sell it to them at all. The EU have shot themselves in the foot now.
