I only listened to the first part of this speech. But I was very concerned about her view of a “perfectly competitive” economy. Harks back to “Trussonomics” It’s just not realistic to allow so many businesses to fail. This would create economic chaos and complete instability.

Conversely I recently read that Labour are doing away with regulations that prohibit uncompetitive mergers. So the monopolies and mergers commission would only step in where there are exceptionally uncompetitive takeovers. I’m not sure where they would draw this line.

For economic stability, we need a careful balance between the two approaches.

Just had a look at the petition and the petition data below it  lots of Tory MPs and bots on there.

I would be vary careful about signing anything these days and giving a helping hand to Putin who is intent on causing any chaos possible with his bots .

Thanks Meg, election might not happen but cannot see PM serving a full term.

The Labour government has a significant majority so that means neither they nor Starmer are going anywhere for the full term (exceptional event excluded of course). This petition will act as a nudge. It will remind Starmer et al that he is sailing close to the edge of what is seen as acceptable.
However, he also knows that a lot of the noise of complaint is stirred by the Tory press. I mean, really, who cares about a few rich people having to pay inheritance tax on massive farms? About as many people who own massive farms, that’s how many. Hardly likely to sway an election vote.
More importantly, where are the economic indicators that the Labour policies are damaging the UK? I saw a dip in the value of the pound but it has comfortably recovered. The stock market continues to grow. The financial sector has recovered from the thrashing Truss decided it needed. Employment levels are static - not bad but not good.

A couple more made me chuckle:

And going back to that fake-farmer Clarkson…

All of this is “Common” knowledge :icon_wink:

That’s quite surprising Meg…
:astonished:

Told you…

This petition reminds me of the hoohaa over the Brexit result, when people like Starmer, and loads of other MPs and embittered remainers, were demanding another referendum. I have little love for this present government, but I respect the result of the last General Election. We seem to be run by Social Media these days, instead of the democratic rule of law, which is really very troubling.

Yes but…Meg has demonstrated that there have been lots of votes posted from other countries, but what if those votes were cast by Brits living overseas and could still cast a valid vote? Like Lincs for example.
And…even if the suspected invalid votes were in the thousands, we are looking at close to 3 million votes now cast. Such a very small proportion in comparison.

Brits living overseas can vote? They weren’t allowed to in the referendum.

A few things to unpick here.
First, the list of country codes that was shared by Meg do not reflect the locations where British citizens living outside the UK reside. Botswana? Bosnia? Congo? Georgia? Guyana? Kazakhstan? Nepal? Reunion? Uzbekistan? All with fairly high counts. But very low British residents. So more than a little dodgy and a sure sign of external interference in UK politics. But I’d note that most Brits who have retired to sunnier climates actually tend to vote Tory. I can confirm that first hand. So not really any sort of balanced representation of the voting population of the UK.
Second, for both the referendum and for general elections in the UK, British citizens living outside the UK retain the right to vote. They can register and for the general elections their vote is counted into the constituency where they previously lived.
But keep signing the petition, nothing will happen except you’ll look back and wonder why Elon Musk keeps encouraging you to do so. What has it got to do with him?

It may have escaped your notice Annie, but this is not a referendum, nor is it about Brexit… :009:

So Brits living abroad are allowed to vote in elections but not in a referendum?

I don’t know Annie, it’s a completely different topic…

Not really a different topic because there was also a very large and controversial second referendum petition signed by about 4m + with similar accusations of fake signatures.

I think the wording on the petition was wrong John. Nobody in their right mind would think that such a petition would bring about a general election. In my opinion, what is does do is try and demonstrate the mood of the country and perhaps convince the more level headed of the labour government to think again about Starmers manifesto and perhaps bring in a vote of no confidence against him. They can do this, the conservative party wasted no time in bringing down Thatcher, Johnson and Truss.
I personally added my name to the petition, not because I thought there would be a general election, or even despatch the labour party, I just wanted to voice my opinion to the labour manifesto with my vote and I suspect most of the voters will have the same intention. Apparently protesting by means of a petition in the UK is still legal, and it’s peaceful, it doesn’t block roads or destroy works of art, or the many other annoying things that professional protestors get up to. But it might in the future…

I won’t wonder anything of the sort Lincs, and I’m happy to have added my name to the almost 3 million signatories, whoever they might be…Although I suspect there will be a lot of Farmers, students, pensioners and folks who don’t want to send their kids off to fight the Russians on that list, and people who think net zero is bollocks!

We know that anybody in a position of power won’t take any notice of these petitions Annie, the best it will do is make em’ think.
