69th B-day challenge

Happy New Year everyone! After going through my first ever experience with Sciatica (and hopefully last time!) and the usual aches and pains that are part of aging, I have luckily been able to continue with my usual unicycling routine, which I still do mostly for fun and fitness.

So having just turned 69 years old earlier this month, I decided to challenge myself to climb the steepest ramp in the Beach area, specifically Torrance beach. I’ve climbed it on smaller unicycles, but decided to try it on my biggest one, which has a 3 ft diameter tire! This was no doubt the hardest thing I’ve done or at least in quite a while.

At one point I pretty much stalled out and somehow was able to keep going without a dismount after doing a little corrective hop. Anyway here’s a short video. Hope you’re all doing great!

Every cyclist knows to zig zag up a steep slope surely? Glad you made it though.

@Bruce: I wanted to climb it straight up for the added challenge. Plus the fact that this unicycle, having a 36" diameter wheel, covers about 9.5 feet per revolution, and zig zagging a ramp this narrow would not provide enough room.

The one climb I have had to zig zag was the Fargo street hill climb in Echo Park, Los Angeles. At 32% grade it is one of the steepest streets on the planet. The LA Wheelman have hosted the annual event since the mid-1970s and they tell me I was the first person to ever successfully climb it on a unicycle. I’ve done it about 10 times.

I like the extra challenge of riding straight up, and don’t call me Shirley.:grinning:
