Your very first car thread

You bet LD, and ridiculous now to think we swapped it for a Morris J4 van to use to go odd jobbing in…

I bet we all wish we’d had the foresight to keep and garage some of our old cars.

I only I’d kept my Manta 409…Escort RS1800/RS2000/Cosworthand Lancia Integrale I’d be sat on a small fortune (£120k plus)

1938 Austin Big Seven

FGY 157

Parents bought it for me one Xmas … it cost £30 and had been sitting in the garage of a colleague of my Dad’s for many years.

My first car was a Hillman Californian coupe in British Racing Green. Great load of junk with a sewing machine for an engine, but I loved it.

Mini 1000, me and my wife ( then girlfriend) had just passed our test, a few months later we went on a camping holiday to Cornwall, following her parents and one of her brothers ( they had a Skoda rapid coupe) who were following their friends in their car, her other brother was in our car along with a boot full of luggage and a roof rack stacked with camping gear…14 hours later we arrived at the campsite after setting off at 8 the previous evening, the car leading got lost, and we all followed… Never again did we travel through the night…!!

I had a Standard 10 first but l felt it was too old fashioned and traded it in for a Morris 1100 (JNX 299) which l took my driving test in.

Mine was a Morris10. Her name was Bessie and she cost me £25.
Three years later I sold her for £25

1927 Austin with alu body, front foot brake and rear brake by lever. Side valve, generator and magneto style ignition. Max speed 40mph, split windscreen with one wiper. Green leatherette upholstery. Bought for £15, sold to a girl friend for £25.

Coming home just now, I saw a Morris Minor towing a caravan.
He had painted the caravan the same colour as the car, and it looked real smart.

I was surprised though, because unless he has a different engine, I wouldn’t have thought a moggy had enough power to pull a caravan, especially uphill?
Looks like I am wrong though.

I used to love the old moggy’s. I’ve had three.

Must have been a small van Mups…

One of these in this colour, a Vauxhall Cavalier Mk.1, 1981.
The Vauxhall paintshop must have opened a tube of Smarties as they came in bright green, orange, pale blue, red, yellow and brown.
Enjoyed it as a first car though the car I learned to drive in was my dad’s Vauxhall Viva.

That’s what my dad started off with, Carol.
We used to go to Bridlington every weekend in it to our caravan at Sewerby. Took absolutely ages!:015:

Funnily enough this was my 1st car bought in 1976 for £15 off my brother, what a tank of a car this was with lovely leather seats and a arm rest …wooheee…loved it to bits, sadly had to scrap it in 1979

I remember my Dad being so proud of his new car. I think it was a Vauxhall Wyvern? He was so proud because it had white wall tyres, do you remember those?
I can even remember the number plate from childhood.
WPC 599.

Odd isn’t it about registration numbers why you can remember some and not others? My dad had a Bedford Dormobile when we were kids, reg. no. WRA 672, why I can remember that I’ve no idea, and he had a Zephyr 4 in 1965, DVO 641C.
Weird…

Oh yes … my Dad had a second-hand Austin 16

KLH 759

AND I still remember (from childhood days) Mum’s co-op dividend number

Well blow me . . same here. 1168650
Isn’t that weird, when now I can’t remember what I’ve gone into the next room for!

Lol noooo not weird

The first few years of life, shape our future.
Learning our times tables and the alphabet for example.

889354

Ah yes, the Co-op number as well, 55280…

All these reg numbers would be worth a fortune.

My grandad always said I could have his Fird Anglia when he popped his clogs as I’d always helped (hindered…just a 6 year old helping grandad).

When he died in 2001 he still owned it (collecting dust in his garage) but…did I get it?
No…my uncle made sure his son got it.

I wonder how much that reg us wirth now and what car it’s on…my cousin sold it straight away.
