Your very first car thread

I’ve found another ‘before’ and an ‘after the dustcart event’

Hello Rachel, I now own this car and would be interested in any memories or old pictures you may have of it :-D. I did email your website address, not sure if you ever saw it?

regards, John

A dark green Austin A30. It came with a gold-seal factory reconditioned engine but I always asked for far more speed out of it than it was capable of giving. It wore out in about a year.

I had a Robin Reliant, like Del from Fools & Horses. That would have been about 1969. I’d had a bike Yamaha 50, and when i past my test i wanted a Daytona. I had visions of being a Hells Angel. But my Mum wouldn’t sign the HP, i was only 16. She said i’d kill myself. Someone she worked with had a Reliant and you could drive them with a motorbike licence. Turned out to be a good thing 'cos by the time i was 17 and old enough to drive, i’d had a years practise on the road. Then after i’d passed my car test, i traded the Reliant in, and bought a Moggy 1000. Use to spend most weekends in the scrapyard getting bits off other cars, to keep mine on the road. Learning as i went on.

In 1969 your Reliant would have been a Reliant Regal not a Robin. The Reliant Robin was launched in 1973. Del and Rodney also had a Regal (Van) not a Robin as is often incorrectly stated. ;-)

My first car was a split screen Morris Minor convertible Reg. LBT 65.
When that hit the dust, I had an A30 with handle but my pride and joy came next an Austin Healey Frog Eye Sprite Reg. 741 RBH. She had twin SU’s with a 4 branch manifold, a terrific car with character, I drove all over the country in her, those were the days when driving was sheer pleasure, many happy memories.

If any one knows someone with a frog eye, I have a new door which I had made and never got a chance to use.

Hillman Imp here too it was a burgundy sort of maroon type colour:)

Your first automobile

What was your first car?
What do you drive now?

My first care was a 1960 Pontiac Parisienne.
I am not driving now. I sold my car to my brother. Much too early, I should have kept it.

Hey Bruce, thanks for that link. I didn’t realize it was already on the forum. I will look through it…

By the way, how did you find that so fast, is there a trick to finding something so I don’t post again?

You just have to read all 45,200 threads but Bruce is a fast reader.

Stop teasing me now Longdogs, hahaha

My first car was a sunbeam Alpine …

Fiat 850 Sport Coupe 2plus2, 1973, bought when I was in Germany, my wife and I did most of Europe in that little motor luggage on the back seat, the boot only big enough for the sandwiches.

My first was a blue Ford Anglia 1965 just like the Harry Potter one bought for £50 off a mates brother. I got it when I was 17 after passing my test.

After that messed round for a few months in a red Hillman Imp.

But the next one was the best. An F series Vauxhall Victor. It was given to me by my Uncle in Belgium. He brought it over for me. Had to be re registered so was an L reg.
It had that swept back windscreen,3 gears column change, left hand drive, bench seats and lots of chrome to polish.

I only learned to drive 10 years ago so mine was a 1litre corsa

They never called those FA Victors did they?

Yes you are right.

This is like mine but mine was cream.

I didn’t learn to drive till I was 34. My first car was a Mk2 Ford Escort estate
I learned about car mechanics on that car, working my way up from checking the oil to repairing the brakes, & changing the gearbox
