Your favourite towns/cities?

Zanzibar and London

Absolutely despise London to visit. Horrid place with what I found to be very ignorant people. Sorry, but that was what I found.

To live, well, I loved Worcester, but by far and away my most favourite place to live was Berlin. That was before the wall came down. Fantastic.

Have relatives across the water from you darlin’ in Gosport.

It’s a difficult one because there are so many interesting places for different reasons but “Rome” has got to be up there for me.

Reuben darlin’ - did you see the news over the weekend??? - apparently archaeologists have located a wall inside some of the caverns underneath the city near the Coliseum with an almost intact mosaic which is estimated to be more than 2000 years old.

No I didn’t see that Uncle Joe but it sounds very interesting. Several years ago we visited the site of Pompeii and the smaller lesser known site of Herculaneum/Ercolano. Herculaneum was a wealthier town than Pompeii with much better preserved remains there and vast areas underneath the modern day town still to excavate. The belief is there are many artifacts to find of wealth and interest buried there. It’s all fascinating stuff when new finds are unearthed.

Ancient Rome is not really my period of history - I prefer ancient Egypt. Have been to Luxor and seen the Valleys of the Kings and Queens. I wanted to go into a particular tomb of the kings whilst I was there, but regrettably that tomb wasn’t open.

I think ancient civilizations in general are interesting Egypt being another.- Did you manage to visit the Cairo museum? it’s an amazing place full of Tutankhamun’s treasures and artifacts recovered from his tomb as well as other things. When in Cairo I went into one of the pyramids but to be honest I did not care for that as it made me feel very claustrophobic all those low small passageways before one gets to the heart of it.

We visited the Cairo Museum on our first trip to Egypt and I was surprised at how big it was. The Tutankhamun room with all the treasures and artifacts was truly amazing.

We stayed in Luxor for our second visit, on Crocodile Island (now renamed King’s Island). We visited to the Valley of the Kings, and went inside Tutankhamun’s tomb, I was surprised how small it was compared to other tombs around.

No Reuben darlin’ I missed Cairo altogether - flew directly to Luxor and spent the first week cruising the Nile down to Aswan and back. Karnak temple was an amazing place - so much history to it!!! Would love to be there if they ever perform the Opera Aida there again.

That seems like some really good experiences.

We visited Egypt on an impulse rather than planning it. We were in Cyprus for a holiday and decided to take a cruise ship from there to see the pyramids. We thoroughly enjoy the cruise and Cairo and the pyramids but the museum was the hi-light for me.

That sounds brilliant and I hope you get your wish to visit again and see the Opera Aida.

I hate the Big Towns and Citys, I’m an Islander and love the peace and quiet when I go back home to Mull. I like Thurso as it’s nice and wee and it’s real friendly but I prefer Villages.
One old Town I do quite like is St Andrews I have a friend who lives there so I do visit from time to time. But the big Citys I avoid like the plaque.

Towns & Cities

Assuming towns and cities to visit overseas my favourite was Dubai, UAE but seeing it on TV lately it’s changed so much from what I remember back in 1974 right through to the last time that I was there in 1984.
Because of my circumstances at the time I regarded Dubai as home believe it or not but then I wasn’t born in the UK!

A close second is Rotterdam because I nearly went to live there permanently after spending over six months living and working in Holland. Great people and lovely areas in Greater Rotterdam, despite its industrial heart.

For different reasons I love Malta - I was born there (Royal navy family) so I’m biased and I loved Valletta and M’Tarfa - the place where I was born and then there’s Bastia and Calvi in Corsica and Elba, off the Tuscan coast plus Menton, Cannes and Nice on the French Riviera because I visited them all in the early 90s - each has its charms, especially Menton, which was a Victorian favourite.
Finally, Spain and DĂ©nia and Calpe are my favourite large towns followed by Valencia and Barcelona as favourite cities then small towns like Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar and Blanes on the Costa Brava, Tossa is a gem - really!! stevmk2

Hi Stevmk, came over to join you!!! My favourite places are Stratford on Avon and Amsterdam, not forgetting Venice.

Hello Meg!!! Really nice to see you here. Hope you’ll stay. stevmk2

my favrate place is the thousands islands in northern ontario

Whenever we have travelled long distance we have always made a point of stopping off for up to a week in town or city of whichever country we were in, just for a good look round really. I have a few favourite places but I think my real favourite is Singapore, I just love it there.

In my younger days I visited New York and loved it but now avoid all cities, can’t stand crowds, noise, litter. Last year I went I to London to pick up a passport, couldn’t get home quick enough!

Stratford, York, LLandudno

Chester is one of my favourites in this country and I loved Milan.
