Have just been watching some of the claims made against Yorkshire cricket club players by an Asian player.
he is claiming that racism is rife there and making some serious accusations but how do we know what he is saying is true?
My Mother was Irish and for most of her life she and all Irish people have been the butt of jokes about the Irish race. Joke shops still sell Irish joke books, stupid unfunny mugs, Irish Mick wigs and so on and many comedians have become very wealthy telling Irish jokes. Imagine if they were all jumping up and down saying âthatâs racist.â Even when my Mum was very elderly a nurse in hospital said âoh I bet you have a terrible temperâ when she said on a form that she was Irish. I thought that was very unprofessional.
Having been brought up in Yorkshire, through WW2 and on into the 1950s, although born in Lancashire, I learned, very early on, that Yorkshire people tend to say what they think, at the time that they think it.
Later on, I was often reminded how important that honest, open, direct communication was.
When I hear racial, or many other discussions, taking place, nowadays, where the honesty is no longer on the surface, and, even in the Race discussions, there can be two things going on, one is how anti racist the speaker is, the other where, in the background, they, the goodies, wonât live in certain places, or employ certain people, because of their race, the dishonesty is rampant!
In my book, Iâd take the Yorkshire Approach any time.
As for this set of public complaints, Iâm a little worried about why they only brought it up now, rather than back when.
I think that much of it, in Sport, is meant to be harmless banter.
Think âSledgingâ invented by the Aussies, in Cricket.
Maybe sadly, some of the only ways of âtaking the Mickeyâ (wonder where that came from?) is by having a go at the way others talk, look, their habits, whatever.
Taking the mick or micky comes from the rhyming slang ⊠to micturate = to urinate = going for a mickey. Also a Jimmy Riddle can be used.
So the old saying of taking the piss was translated into taking the mick or mickey.
Another thought, is that our English Language is spoken by so many, in the world (including some Cockneys) that nearly all the insults can be understood by many more people than those speaking in other languages?
Other races do insult us, as wellâŠbut we donât know what they are saying.!
Note: I am not making light of Racism, I am attempting to understand how it comes about and whether we, in the UK, are the worst âRacistsâ.
Especially as he left the team, only to return a few years later. This time, he was dropped for poor performance. Is that the reason behind his racism accusations? I couldnât possibly comment.
Stand by for a flood of similar complaints and huge payouts.
I canât do the link thingâŠBut its come to light with 10 year old texts from Mr Azeem Rafiq that he too was quite racist with his comments about Jews
Iâm not the least bit surprised ⊠if in doubt, give the yid a whipping. Pssst, Iâve still got the tongue lashing marks
I expect if people look right back in time, many of todayâs âbleatersâ have been guilty of poorly thought out comments.
