Yesterday - went out to buy a loaf of bread

… came home with a new cooker! Not literally - they wouldn’t have let me take it on the bus - it is being delivered and installed next Monday (21st).

My trusty ‘Wolf’ range cooker has been with me for over 30 years and been seriously over worked! Anyway one of the ovens recently went on the fritz - gasman said it needed something called a solenoid and - guess what - they don’t make them anymore! Thanks to changes in Building Regs/ HSE Regs I cannot replace like for like without wrecking my kitchen - which I am not prepared to do. Also most Range Cookers these days are dual fuel - gas hobs and electric ovens - definite no no!

Wandered into Curry’s - just to look - and emptied my bank account all over their counter!

Bread - what bread??

Ooh, exciting, when is it arriving? Photos required!

Hope you enjoy your new cooker.

Now you can make bread. You won’t have to buy it.

We have been looking at getting a range cooker for a wee while but have no idea what one.
I also did what you did a few years back but with a car. I went to our garage to get new wiper blades and came away with a new car. When I returned home himself was more than a bit surprised and I was told I wasn’t safe to be let out on my own lol. :joy:

It’s a good job you didn’t go out for something like a leg of lamb, gawd knows what you would have come home with.

I usually do make my own - but - am not good at slicing it so often buy a small Warburton’s sliced to make toasties.

Monday 21st. I don’t envy them removing the Wolf though - it was there first and the kitchen fitted around it!

I bought a bread slicer when I used to make a lot of bread. It didn’t work, but your comment reminded me of it.

Well you do know that once you start these things, it doesn’t actually end. So I’m thinking you might need to start redesigning your kitchen! Then there’s decorating…which makes the other rooms look bad, so you need to do them, then reorganise… sigh A very expensive loaf of bread :joy:

No way - it is perfect - for me anyway!

Not seen one of those before - how come it didn’t work?

The plastic shifted, the bread shifted. The whole process didn’t create the beautifully even slices I wanted. When they do it in the bakery, the slicers are steel, so nothing moves. I saw a wood one when I was looking for that picture. I’m not sure if that would work better. It also probably works better with heavy whole grain loaves, but those aren’t that difficult to cut by hand.

I wonder if a wire cheese slicer would work? @butterscotch

What sort did you get Tabby? I’m in awe that you actually have a kitchen I’ve been here a year and I still don’t have a proper working kitchen :frowning: you must be gutted to have lost a Wolfe appliance.

My Aga is a solid fuel job (that could be converted to oil) and in a way I look forward to winter when it’s fully in use. It bakes the best bread I’ve tasted and cooks most things to perfection, but when the warmer weather is here and I’m back to gas hop with electric ovens, it’s not the same really inviting kitchen. I will also miss the almost instant hot water at the kitchen tap.
