Worst food whilst travelling

That reminded me of a couple of truly dreadful meals I’ve had while travelling. One was a chili pepper and pork dish in Beijing - greasy pork and way too many chilis. I was ill for two days afterwards. Another was a road-side restaurant while driving from Kharkov to Kiev. Fat laden dish of fatty potato dumplings. Bad fat. Yuck.
Anyone else? Doesn’t have to be abroad.

Another for me was chicken feet. That was in Taiwan.

My first visit to England to Scotland. One of the gals on the tour sat at breakfast with her son, as I came into the room. She immediately said to me, “Go get the spread for your toast, and try it.”
I’ll try most anything, so I did. I have never tasted anything so vile in my life!
It was marmite!!
I like haggis, escargot, liver but that stuff was so bad I almost took another bite to be sure…but did not! Ewwww.

Yes - marmite. I’m a Scotsman and I don’t like it either. Nor escargot for that matter.

I agree about Marmite nothing like as good as Vegemite, even though Vegemite was an attempt to copy Marmite, but even that is an acquired taste. For some reason Marmite is sloppier but harder to spread than Vegemite.

Two of my most disappointing meals happened when I was in the UK and both were something I had really been looking forward to.

In Blackpool and Folkestone I bought Fish and Chips, in Blackpool the fish and chips was inedible and the accompanying coffee was undrinkable. In Folkestone they got the chips right but the fish was bloody awful.

On the other hand the whelks in Folkestone were delicious if a bit expensive. All my other meals in the UK were fine.

That is £10 worth of whelks, where I live you could buy two pizzas for that price

I must admit that in the NT and northern WA I get fed up to the back teeth with Baramundi, there is nothing wrong with it but you would think it was the only fish they catch.

During a family holiday once, travelling by car all the way to Munich, we stopped for a quick coffee at a service station on the Austrian border. We were very surprised to be given a huge cup/bowl (much bigger than a normal mug) full of something which should have been coffee but was just brown water, considering the taste! :anguished:

Another time at a beach resort over here, in the Puglia region, we were at a restaurant which served many fish specialities, including “raw fish” delicacies, but when I saw those little wriggly things dancing about on my plate, I looked at my husband in shock , he immediately understood and asked the waiter to cook them a little more, for me. The waiter was even more shocked! “Cannolicchi” are served that way! I think they’re called razor clams in English. No raw fish and no raw seafood for me thank you, no sushi,no oysters.
