Couldn’t do a day on a beach, let alone a week or two, never have been able to, a couple of days away, every two weeks or so is great, in your own space, just think, some folks spend that amount of time, in an airport or flying, for a week away somewhere.
Never been abroad, this year we’ve been to Scotland, and spent a long weekend at the lakes, we’ve booked a week in waymouth next year and was going to book somewhere next March, April but I’m due to have cateract surgery around that time so I doubt we’ll get away…
Same here, I just see it as hassle not relaxation.
I’m increasingly losing the appetite to travel abroad, largely due to the hassle of flying although Gatwick Airport is a stone’s throw away! When ever I’ve been in any of the terminals working it just seems like stress!
Give me The UK anytime, so much to explore… not cheap though! ![]()

Chilli, I have to say I am full of admiration for folks who have a high tolerence level for hanging about and not getting stressed by it, it is a quality in it’s own right.
It’s difficult and costly with a dog, as the cost for her private boarding adds on to costs, but saying that, I do book her in for several weeks throughout the year. Either to pop down to Essex/London to see friends & family, have a few nights in Norwich, or just do stuff at home. She is booked in for the end of this month, Mon-Fri.
I have also booked her for 5 separate weeks over the coming year and nearer the time will decide. In June a cafe friend and I will do a day trip to London, as we have matinee tickets for Miss Saigon.
My passport expired a couple of years ago and ATM I have no plans to renew it or to book any trips abroad. With the way things are nowadays I don’t think I would feel safe. Also, at 74, my mobility is not so good. From the age of 21, I took myself off on overseas jaunts, mostly alone, sometimes with mum when we started the cheaper cruises (Ocean Village, till the ships were sold off).
I feel I have done and seen enough to satisfy me, certainly abroad, with no particular country left on my bucket list. Wouldn’t have minded Portugal as I loved Madeira, or the Canadian Rockies, but it’s not the end of the world if I never get there. What stops me now are aviation fuel costs, the thought of navigating passport control and customs, the lengthy queues in terminals, cancellations, threats. I think, is it all worth it now? I have seen some great places, and have my photos and memories.
In 2027 I would like to consider holidays in this country, either getting there by train, short drives, or coach. Once I stop paying out for house maintenance, repairs, or silly purchases, I can see what’s out there, and budget accordingly.
We usually have two holidays, a smaller and larger one. This year we’ve done three, Norway cruise, Iceland cruise (mainly to see the eclipse) and we’re off in to Las Vegas for a week at the end of the month. I didn’t intend to go to Vegas, I originally wanted to go back to Austria for their Christmas markets, but the wife wanted to Vegas as we haven’t been there for a while. After that, we’re cruising the Mediterranean for almost a month in August. Will probably do something local before that, possibly a drive around Scotland. Beyond that, the wife keeps going on about returning to Florida or Canada, so I guess that will be in 2028.
I would have liked to see a Christmas market.
This was taken in Salzburg a few years ago the sort of thing they do. Endless huts like these selling decorations and stuff. Pictures really doesn’t do it justice.
Holiday?
If, like me, you live in SW France with beaches an hour or so away, mountains two hours drive, great well priced restaurants on our doorstep, and warm weather right up until last week (and back to 20+ deg next week) why go on holiday? Besides, who’d look after the nutter dogs and the fussy cats?
I always used to go abroad for my holidays when travel seemed more straightforward, you went to the airport, checked in, got on your flight and arrived
Now with delays, cancellations, extra charges for this and that, I just couldn’t be bothered
Plus with a few health problems the thought of hanging around a crowded airport, for me would be a nightmare
I go all over the place, I spent a month this summer on a European island where it was lovely and warm for the whole month (the locals were complaining about the heat).
In September had a lot of fun travelling with my daughter in Australia visiting three states, it was a terrific trip even though we missed out on the trip’s original purpose.
I was going away end of last month for a week to visit a couple of National parks, geographic features and a town called Carinda but this Wet El Nino put paid to that but might go the end of this month if it is not getting too hot.
Yes I try to go every month of the year, sometimes twice or sometimes every other month.
Both British Isles and abroad. It is just my routine to get away frequently.
I’m hoping to spend some time with a buddy in the middle of nowhere this Christmas, North Wales!
She has two nutty dogs ![]()
Our holidays are on The Roman Ridge with the dog.
I’ve not been abroad for a few years now. Mainly because I look after my old fella who is 88 (suffers from dementia n Alzheimer’s). Also have my dog who is hard work.
I do have a static in Anglesey so spend quite a bit of time on Anglesey/North Wales
Sure one day when I’m on my own (old fella and snowey moved into the next life) I will try some solo trips abroad.
We used to go to Turkey every year for holidays. We haven’t been for a couple of years and our passports have expired. We are too old for all the hassle at the airports.
We have friends nearby with two of those dog-ponies. They are quite demanding but so incredibly cute when they are puppies. Imagine the dog food bill each month…
My first visit to Turkey was in Kayseri in the centre country. It for a project for an aluminium plant. It was awful. It got very cold and quite often there were power outages. And the food was just hellish. By way of contrast my fife and I went to the south of Turkey on holiday, the climate so mild in mid November and food was excellent !
