If you relieved yourself in a public latrine in ancient Rome, you may have used a tersorium to wipe. These ancient devices consisted of a stick with a vinegar- or salt water-soaked sponge attached.

Surely you would have to tie something to the other end of the stick so you would know which was yours and not share someone elses

Most Asians don’t use toilet paper either, they don’t believe that smearing shit over your bum with paper is very hygienic and prefer to use water - these days from a small spray as in my previous post. I tend to agree with them and fitted one in my toilet.

Yes but most Asian bathrooms are awash with water and no one ever says how they dry off .

My Nan and Grandad had the Guardian Newspaper cut into squares hanging from string.

That’s the best thing for the Guardian. Cut it up before reading it, preferably.

Too late. Multi- feature bidets can be bought that incorporate a sorta hot (warm) air heater to dry where has been washed.

I buy 3-ply quilted, and 3 ply boxes of tissues, too, but 4-ply? No wonder sewers get blocked!

Cling film is better than all this paper tissue. It’s readily washable.
