Windows 10 is driving me nuts!

It’s been updating for over an hour and still only 10%!
Is there a way to stop updates, that a complete idiot can understand please?

It’s bad enough that it completely disorganised my photos so I have to search three or four places to find them, I hate it!

Bring back Windows 7!

Tess, I am still on W.7. on this p.c. and I’ve got 8.1 on my laptop.

My computer man keeps suggesting I go onto W.10 now, but after hearing and reading so many people complaining, I’m really worried I won’t understand it.

How long have you had W.10 now?

Don’t do it mups .
It’s horrible .
Since I went onto w 10 I have no idea where anything is .
As Tess says photos are in umpteen places I never know where they are .
I wish I was back on XP.

Tessa I have set my PC to metered usage so can’t take large updates.

Explained here…

I found a steering wheel in my underpants this morning . . .

It was driving me nuts!

Yep it’s a colossal pain. Oh for those simple Windows 7/ XP days. Trouble is they don’t work anymore because unless you don’t use the internet at all they stop working properly if you don’t update. IO have a little netbook that’s still running WXP that I never plug into the internet. Only use it to write stories. IT’s OK but very slow. So unless you’re using your computer in isolation. you have to update. Necessary evil. As usual I am happy to be corrected if there is a solution

You don’t say if your updating from say windows 7 or just updating an existing windows 10. That makes a huge difference. We don’t even know if your on a laptop or desk PC. Again is the drive an SSD drive or HDD drive
have you defragmented or optimized your drive recently?

Also the processor may not be the fastest or the is a lot of unwanted “clutter” on your computer memory which is slowing it down. then of course if downloading via the internet it depends on the internet speed you are receiving.

So to help you do need to give out a lot more information

What you should do, or what I do, is put all my photos onto a second drive be it internal or external. that frees up the main “C” drive. the extrnl Hard (HDD) drives are not that expensive and save a lot of problems as to getting to photos etc.

or for SSD extrnl drives a lot faster but more expensive

I have an intrnl backup drive and additional extrnal one to be doubly sure. before anything else all photos go on both drives then sorted out ones to keep and those to ditch

Yes!..that’s what I do. I have a 2 TB external hard drive and everything is on that. It will take years to fill it up. At least if the hard drive crashes you still have all your stuff. Plus it’s also connected to a TV receiver box so I can record anything that’s on free air TV straight to it as well. But you have to make sure you get a really good quality external drive. Expensive but worth it IMO.

So those last two comments were something a " complete idiot" would understand yeah? Right!

It finally finished updating at 7.30 this morning!
I had lots to do last evening including typing an important letter and saving pets!

It was updating Windows 10, I’ve had it since my laptop was bought for me last 2018 spring. Joint Xmas and birthday pressie.

I have an external hard drive with all my photos from my old laptop on, several thousands. I don’t want to fiddle about finding them on that, I like my photos on my laptop. I’ll move them around one day so I can find them in one place, that’ll take a couple of days!

I just want to stop the damn thing updating when it likes, any simple suggestions. :frowning:

Thanks Meg, I’ll ask a grandchild to do that for me

I’d say to let the updates go ahead but I expect there will be advice on how to stop them.

Updates on slower Internet connections or computers can take ages and might often appear to have hung but be wary about just giving up and turning off. The chances are that the update is working in the background and to interrupt this process can lead to a messed up computer …more than you consider that it already is messed up. Best to just leave the computer, even go to bed and let the update do its thing. I’ve just done the update you are probably writing about. It took a while (I didn’t time it) even on a fast Internet connection and a reasonably fast Desktop computer.

XP and Windows 7? I always said these were good operating systems right from their release dates. This was very much going against the flow of popular opinion at the time. I remember forums being full of people saying how awful they thought those operating systems were. Now it’s said that they were the best operating systems ever. Oh well…

Windows 8 was a bugger. MS were forcing an OS upon us that was suited to phone and tablet touchscreens not laptop and desktop machines.

I don’t have a problem with W10, the idea being you right click your start button and search for whatever you want.

I have my File Explorer (file icon) on my taskbar for getting pics, docs etc.

I keep all my fave pics in the clouds … GooglePhotos, where they can be easily searched by date or by album.

OK Tessa. I reckon the easiest thing for you to do is get on to a local IT person who will come around and help you out at home. There’s usually plenty around. Students are the best. They are cheap and they are keen and usually know their stuff. Your local business guide should have a few listed. As far as windows goes,THere is usually an option message that comes up but you have to be there at the time to use it. Not sure how to set this.

I’ve disabled the update function TessA but one or two still get through. For the latest update they have to ask me to download it and I refuse. They keep pestering me saying that W10 won’t be supported if I don’t install it…Well they can ‘do one!’
Apparently I only have until the 31st of August, so perhaps I will be faced with the ‘blue screen of death’ if I don’t. They made similar threats concerning my desktop computer running Vista…They huffed and puffed and it still still works perfectly well…Even on the internet, although it’s a bit slower than this new fangled laptop with an Intel core i5 - 8th gen…Dogs wotsits!..

Do you have a Nextdoor community website in your area Tess?

I’ve seen local peeps here asking for tech help and getting it, sometime FOC, from a neighbour. We do favours for one another. Perhaps you could trim a neighbours beard in return. :102:

winndows 10 is ok once you get used to it. I struggld on how to get music from CD onto Drive “C” until I found out how via Windows media player. it doesn’t show “rip” until a disc is installed.

AS you can see rip settings are now showing. Took me ages to find it

This is perfectly legal if only used for personal entertainment

Win10 is the biggest pile of dogsh*t ever invented. How the so called ‘IT Experts’ can get away with it is beyond me. If it was a car it would have closed the factory (remember the Allegro).

I have to say I do think W7 is far better. still got W7 professional disc in a draw

At this rate I’ll be getting my old laptop fired up, it’s held together with sellotape but heyho needs must!
