The first machine to be called a Bicycle.
The name came from the British penny and farthing coins
The British Penny was much larger than the Farthing.
So that the side view resembles a larger Penny leading a smaller Farthing.
That is your lesson for the day

I don’t think that is correct, bicycles were first used in mainland Europe and the name comes from there. First used in a French publication in the 1840s. The names velocipedes and bicycles were interchangeable
(I used to take an interest in bikes and their origin)
Edit:
I believe Penny Farthings are still made and raced in Tasmania
The Penny Farthing is so called because it has two different sized wheels.
The front one is likened to a penny coin and the back one is likened to a farthing.
In or around 1870.
There is one in the cycle museum in Birmingham England.
I always thought they were call that because they were that cheap back in the day.
TV presenter Jeremy Vine owns and rides a Penny Farthing near his London Home.
I often wondered how you get on one of these things, Jeremy shows how it’s done in this video. It looks so easy!
We don’t see how he gets off though!
I’m sure there must be a logical explanation
